San Francisco, California, United States PUBLIC POLICY INSTITUTE OF CALIFORNIA Full time
Position Overview

The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization dedicated to enhancing public policy in California through independent and objective analysis. Our mission is to provide high-quality research and foster informed discussions that lead to sustainable policy solutions across the state.

Work Environment: Hybrid model with flexibility for remote work.

Role Purpose and Qualifications

PPIC's Water Policy Center is seeking a research fellow with a robust background and keen interest in water policy research. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to linking research with policymaking, possessing substantial knowledge in western water and climate policy. Expertise in one or more of the Center's primary focus areas is highly desirable: (1) ensuring access to clean and reliable water; (2) fostering healthy and resilient ecosystems; and (3) preparing for natural disasters such as droughts, floods, and wildfires, with a focus on the impacts of climate change.

The successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree or equivalent in engineering, physical sciences, or a related discipline, showcasing exceptional skills in both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, as well as effective communication and non-technical writing abilities. We welcome applicants at various career stages, from recent Ph.D. graduates to experienced researchers. While familiarity with California's policy landscape is advantageous, candidates with relevant federal or state-level research experience are also encouraged to apply.

PPIC values diverse backgrounds and experiences among its staff, emphasizing excellence, varied talents, and alignment with the Institute's mission and values.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Collaborate with researchers at the PPIC Water Policy Center to identify and pursue research opportunities that will enhance California's water management strategies.
  2. Engage in all phases of research design, execution, and analysis that address critical policy issues, utilizing a range of quantitative and qualitative research tools.
  3. Conduct original research and contribute to PPIC publications, including reports, policy briefs, and articles, in partnership with research and communications teams.
  4. Build and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders, including water leaders, policymakers, researchers, and the public, through presentations and outreach efforts.
  5. Work alongside the WPC director and the development team to identify funding opportunities for research initiatives.
  6. Actively participate as a collaborative member of the WPC team and the broader research community, attending meetings, events, and conferences.
  7. Mentor junior research staff to enhance their research skills and professional development.

Key Attributes

Successful candidates will possess strong research capabilities, alongside excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills. Analytical thinking, organizational abilities, and the capacity to manage multiple projects are essential for success in this role. A Ph.D. in engineering, physical sciences, or a related field is preferred.

Experience in quantitative data collection and analysis is required, with a proven track record of designing and implementing research studies, ideally in a collaborative environment. Familiarity with statistical software, such as R, is preferred.

Exceptional writing skills, demonstrated through previous publications, are crucial; the ability to tailor communication for diverse audiences, including policymakers and the general public, is highly valued. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary for effective collaboration with colleagues across various departments.

While knowledge of California's water policy and management practices is preferred, candidates with relevant experience from other jurisdictions are also encouraged to apply.

PPIC is committed to fostering a diverse workforce and values the unique perspectives and experiences of all applicants.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience. In addition to salary, PPIC offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, retirement contributions, paid holidays, and generous paid time off.

Equal Employment Opportunity Statement:

PPIC is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is dedicated to building a diverse team that reflects the backgrounds and perspectives of California. We encourage applications from all qualified individuals.
