Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a part-time Forensic Autopsy Technician to assist the Assistant Chief Medical Examiners in the completion of autopsies. This position will work varying rotating shifts, including days, weekends, and holidays, and will be responsible for tasks such as incisions, organ removal and weighing, x-rays, digital photography, collecting evidence, fingerprinting, and documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the completion of autopsies, including incisions, organ removal and weighing, x-rays, digital photography, collecting evidence, fingerprinting, and documentation.
  • Retrieve, admit, and release bodies, clean the morgue facility, and ensure morgue equipment and office vehicles receive proper maintenance.
  • Provide instruction to internal and external personnel on morgue procedures and ensure compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Preserve evidence and retrieve deceased persons when required/requested.
  • Respond to mass disaster scenes.

Requirements

  • Must be able to communicate verbally effectively.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and security procedures.
  • Ability to push/pull 100 to 500 lbs. and lift with assistance.
  • Some computer experience/data entry skills.
  • Able to traverse uphill, rocky or otherwise unstable terrain and respond to mass disaster scenes.
  • Experience performing forensic autopsy duties and working with biohazardous materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with human remains in a hospital, morgue, funeral home, or medical examiner's facility.
  • Experience/training with handling evidence.
