Job Responsibilities

The Commonwealth of Virginia is looking for a part-time Forensic Autopsy Technician to join the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. This position is classified as a wage role, averaging up to 29 hours per week, with a maximum of 1500 hours annually, and does not include benefits. The technician will be required to work on a rotating schedule that includes days, weekends, and holidays, with occasional after-hours duties.

This role involves assisting forensic pathologists in conducting autopsies, which includes tasks such as making incisions, weighing and removing organs, performing x-rays, capturing digital images, collecting evidence, fingerprinting, and maintaining thorough documentation. The technician will also manage the retrieval, admission, and release of bodies, maintain cleanliness in the morgue, ensure proper upkeep of morgue equipment and vehicles, and provide training on morgue protocols to both internal and external personnel. Compliance with OSHA regulations is essential, along with the preservation of evidence and responding to mass disaster situations when necessary.

Employment Conditions

Wage employees are subject to specific employment conditions, including:

  • Employment is at the discretion of the appointing authority.
  • Ongoing employment is contingent upon available funding and operational needs.
  • Wage employees do not receive benefits typically available to salaried staff, such as leave, holiday pay, or insurance.
  • Compensation is based solely on hours worked.
  • State law restricts wage employees to an average of 29 hours per week and a total of 1,500 hours within the designated measurement period.
  • Wage employees may apply for classified positions as they become available.
  • Should a wage employee transition to a classified role, they may be eligible to purchase retirement credit for their time served.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must possess effective verbal communication skills, knowledge of OSHA and security protocols, and the physical capability to lift and move weights ranging from 100 to 500 lbs. Basic computer skills and the ability to navigate challenging terrains are also required. Experience in forensic autopsy procedures and handling biohazardous materials is essential.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with human remains in settings such as hospitals, morgues, funeral homes, or medical examiner facilities is advantageous. Training in evidence handling is preferred.
