Colonial Williamsburg stands as the largest living history museum in the United States, encompassing a 301-acre restored colonial capital featuring 88 original structures and 525 reconstructed buildings, meticulously restored through extensive archaeological, architectural, and documentary research.

Our Historic Area is staffed by skilled interpreters and expert tradespeople, all dressed in period attire, who vividly bring the 18th century to life.

Additionally, the Foundation operates two exceptional museums: the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, along with a renowned research library, the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library.

Colonial Williamsburg also boasts five world-class accommodations, including the Williamsburg Inn, Williamsburg Lodge Autograph Collection, Griffin Hotel, Williamsburg Woodlands Hotels and Suites, and the unique Colonial Houses located within the Historic Area.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of dining experiences at our on-site restaurants and taverns, which blend historically inspired cuisine with contemporary tastes. Each year, over 5 million individuals visit Williamsburg, while an additional 20 million engage with us through digital platforms.

Position Overview
The Security Officers are responsible for patrolling all Foundation properties to safeguard exhibits, assist employees, guests, and contractors, and respond promptly to emergency situations and service requests.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct routine patrols and inspections of all Colonial Williamsburg facilities, including museums, historic properties, hotels, golf courses, restaurants, and retail locations.
  • Document and report unusual conditions or events, providing timely and accurate information to management.
  • Monitor safety conditions and report deficiencies to management.
  • Assist and support other Public Safety personnel.
  • Provide emergency assistance to the public as needed.
  • Follow established opening and closing procedures for designated buildings.
  • Detect and conduct preliminary investigations of crimes or unusual activities, which may involve surveillance, interviewing victims and witnesses, and documenting findings.
  • Maintain order, mediate disputes, and manage disturbances.
  • Administer first aid, CPR, and use of AEDs, including assisting incapacitated individuals.
  • Enforce Foundation rules and regulations and control access to restricted areas when necessary.
  • Relieve communications operators as required, becoming familiar with alarm monitoring systems and communication equipment.
  • Escort employees and guests as necessary.
  • Set up crowd, traffic, and parking control measures.
  • Foster open communication to build relationships and partnerships among employees, guests, and residents to mitigate crime risks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Applicants must possess excellent public interaction skills, particularly in high-stress situations. Strong communication skills are essential, along with the ability to read, write, and prepare reports using a computer. Candidates should demonstrate sound judgment under pressure and have completed high school or possess a GED. A clean criminal record is required, with the exception of minor traffic violations.

Successful candidates must qualify annually in CPR, first aid, and AED usage. Flexibility to work irregular hours, including holidays, evenings, and weekends, is necessary. As essential personnel, candidates must be able to report to work during adverse weather or emergency conditions. Pre-employment substance abuse testing is mandatory, and random testing may occur.

Preferred Qualifications:
Two years of public contact experience, two years of college education, or one year of experience with Colonial Williamsburg, along with current CPR, first aid, and AED certification, are preferred.

Physical Requirements:
Candidates must be able to walk, sit, or stand for extended periods, with walking potentially lasting up to 8 hours daily in various weather conditions.

Environmental Requirements:
Ability to work in diverse weather conditions, including storms, extreme temperatures, and contact with allergens such as pollen and dust.

Work may involve navigating slippery surfaces, uneven terrain, and areas with poor lighting or distracting noise.
