Overview

The Patient Financial Advisor is accountable for evaluating patient financial data and effectively communicating with patients and/or responsible parties regarding third-party reimbursement options and the patient’s financial obligations for healthcare services.

This role involves conducting comprehensive social and financial assessments, as well as appropriately directing patients lacking insurance coverage or those eligible for financial assistance to relevant medical eligibility agencies for potential support through Federal, State, or local healthcare programs.

The advisor is also responsible for securing payments or establishing payment plans prior to service delivery, during admission, or throughout the discharge process.

Qualifications
Education:
High School Diploma or GED is required.

Experience: A minimum of 3 years in registration, insurance verification, financial counseling, and patient accounting is required, along with at least 1 year of experience in a healthcare or hospital environment.

Licensure/Certification:
NAHAM or HFMA certification must be obtained within two years of hire.

Essential Skills:
The ideal candidate will possess traits such as patience, empathy, and compassion. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with the ability to articulate clearly and pleasantly over the phone. The candidate must thrive in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate a willingness to collaborate within a team. Proficiency in managing multiple tasks under pressure, flexibility to adapt to change, and effective listening skills are critical. The ability to navigate computer systems while on the phone is necessary, along with advanced knowledge of billing and finance processes, registration, insurance verification, managed care, and government payors. Basic accounting knowledge and familiarity with medical terminology and claims are also required. Strong customer service skills, problem resolution capabilities, and relationship-building skills are essential. A typing speed of at least 40 words per minute is expected. Candidates should aim to achieve proficiency in Epic and legacy practice management systems through successful completion of all related competencies. The ability to travel to various facilities as needed is also required.

Preferred Skills:

A thorough understanding of Federal and State regulations regarding charity care, agency assistance, and debt collection is preferred. Experience with EPIC software is advantageous.
