Overview:

The Space Exploration Group (JSEG) Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) team is a high-performing unit engaged in the design and integration of GN&C systems for various projects, including CubeSats and NASA's Space Launch System (SLS). We are seeking highly qualified candidates to assist in the design, development, and oversight of the Human Lander Systems Program within the Control Systems Design and Analysis branch at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center as a Controls, Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis Subject Matter Expert. This role is pivotal in advancing human exploration to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the development, verification, and validation of control systems for launch vehicles, spacecraft, and landers.
  • Modeling, simulating, and analyzing the performance and stability of control systems, including during landing phases.
  • Collaborating with HLS partners to understand their design and test data, and potentially participating in their testing processes.
  • Analyzing flight data from HLS partners and presenting findings to management.
  • Mentoring junior engineers in control system modeling, simulation, and analysis.
  • Addressing complex challenges related to the design, development, analysis, integration, evaluation, testing, and verification of control systems and simulations.
  • Developing and enhancing software simulations, tools, and scripts.
  • Conducting and analyzing 6-DoF Monte Carlo simulations.
  • Performing trade studies and sensitivity analyses concerning launch vehicle and spacecraft control.
  • Creating and debugging software using Matlab, Simulink, and Simscape.
  • Preparing and delivering technical reports and briefings, including visualizing results.
  • Creating and reviewing engineering and software documentation.

Qualifications:

A degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or a related field is required, preferably from an ABET-accredited institution. Experience requirements typically include a PhD with at least 4 years of experience, a master's degree with at least 8 years of experience, or a bachelor's degree with at least 10 years of experience.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Proficiency in designing and developing flight control systems and actuator allocation methods.
  • Experience analyzing system performance using various techniques.
  • Expertise in modeling, simulating, and analyzing the performance of launch vehicles, spacecraft, and landers.
  • Knowledge of spacecraft components and subsystems.
  • Programming skills in Matlab, Simulink, Simscape, and C/C++.
  • Experience in software development, verification, and validation.
  • Familiarity with trade studies and Monte Carlo simulations related to control systems.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated, capable of working independently.
  • Strong collaboration skills with team members across different locations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers.

Desired Skills/Experience:

  • Ability to derive equations of motion for multi-body spacecraft dynamics.
  • Programming knowledge in languages such as Python.
  • Understanding of trajectory and orbital dynamics.
  • Experience with visualization tools for simulation results.
  • Familiarity with model-based design approaches.

Work Environment:

Office environment requiring effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Interaction with co-workers, management, and clients is essential. Minimal travel within the domestic USA may be required.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit for extended periods during meetings and while performing engineering tasks. Capability to navigate between floors and buildings as necessary.

Equipment and Machines:

Proficiency in operating standard office equipment, including computers and telecommunication devices.

Attendance:

Regular attendance is essential, with a standard workday from Monday to Friday. Some overtime may be necessary to meet project deadlines.

Other Essential Functions:

Independence in decision-making and sound judgment are crucial for this role. Professional grooming and attire are expected.
