Overview:

The Space Exploration Group (JSEG) Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) team is a high-performing unit engaged in the design and integration of GN&C systems for a variety of projects, from CubeSats to NASA's Space Launch System (SLS). We are seeking highly qualified individuals to contribute to the design, development, and oversight of the Human Lander Systems Program within the Control Systems Design and Analysis branch at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center as a Controls, Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis Subject Matter Expert. This pivotal work will play a crucial role in facilitating human exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the development, verification, and validation of control systems for launch vehicles, spacecraft, and landers.
  • Modeling, developing, simulating, and analyzing the performance and stability of control systems during various phases, including touchdown.
  • Collaborating with HLS partners to understand their design/test data and potentially engaging in their testing processes.
  • Conducting analyses of HLS partner flight data and presenting findings to management.
  • Mentoring junior engineers in control system modeling, simulation, and analysis.
  • Addressing complex challenges related to the design, development, analysis, integration, evaluation, testing, and verification of control systems and 6-DoF models and simulations.
  • Developing, modifying, maintaining, and enhancing software simulations, tools, and scripts.
  • Configuring, executing, and analyzing 6-DoF Monte Carlo simulations.
  • Conducting trade studies and sensitivity analyses related to launch vehicle and spacecraft control.
  • Creating, editing, and debugging software using Matlab, Simulink, and Simscape.
  • Preparing and delivering technical reports and briefings, including result visualizations.
  • Creating and reviewing engineering and software documentation.

Qualifications:

A degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or a related field is required, with a preference for degrees from ABET-accredited institutions. Typical experience requirements include a PhD with at least 4 years of experience, a master's degree with at least 8 years of experience, or a bachelor's degree with at least 10 years of experience.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Expertise in designing and developing flight control systems (PID, state space, etc.) and actuator allocation methods.
  • Experience analyzing system performance in both time and frequency domains using various techniques.
  • Proficiency in modeling, simulating, and analyzing the performance of launch vehicles, spacecraft, and landers.
  • Familiarity with modeling spacecraft components and subsystems.
  • Programming skills in Matlab, Simulink, Simscape, and C/C++.
  • Experience in software development, verification, and validation.
  • Experience in conducting trade studies and analyses related to launch vehicle and spacecraft control.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated, capable of independently managing projects from inception to completion.
  • Able to collaborate effectively with team members, both locally and remotely.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Ability to derive equations of motion for multi-body spacecraft dynamics.
  • Programming experience in additional languages such as Python.
  • Understanding of trajectory and orbital dynamics.
  • Experience with creating visualizations from simulation results using tools like Unreal Engine or Satellite Tool Kit (STK).
  • Familiarity with model-based design principles.

Work Environment:

This position is primarily office-based, requiring effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Interaction with colleagues, management, and clients is essential. Some travel within the domestic USA may be required.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit for extended periods during meetings and while performing engineering tasks. Requires mobility to navigate between floors and buildings.

Equipment and Machines:

Proficiency in operating standard office equipment, including personal computers, telephones, and copiers.

Attendance:

Regular attendance is crucial, with a standard workday from Monday to Friday. Some overtime may be necessary to meet project deadlines.

Other Essential Functions:

Independence in decision-making and sound judgment are critical. Professional grooming and attire are expected.
