Overview:

The Space Exploration Group (JSEG) Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) team is a high-performing unit engaged in complex tasks to design and integrate GN&C systems for projects ranging from CubeSats to NASA's Space Launch System (SLS). We are on the lookout for exceptionally qualified candidates to assist in the design, development, and oversight of the Human Lander Systems Program within the Control Systems Design and Analysis branch at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center as a Dynamics, Controls, Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis Lead Integration Engineer. This thrilling role will play a pivotal part in facilitating human missions back to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the development, verification, and validation of 6-DoF simulation software, coordinating with engineers across various teams, organizations, and centers.
  • Oversee the creation and validation of multi-body spacecraft, landers, and launch vehicles dynamics equations of motion.
  • Delegate and monitor tasks, providing guidance and mentorship to junior engineers in dynamics derivation, modeling, simulation, and analysis.
  • Collaborate with HLS partners to understand their design/test data and potentially engage in their testing processes.
  • Analyze HLS partners' flight data periodically and present insights to NASA management.
  • Model, develop, simulate, and assess launch vehicle, lander, and spacecraft performance and stability.
  • Tackle intricate challenges related to the design, development, analysis, integration, evaluation, testing, and verification of control systems and 6-DoF models and simulations.
  • Enhance, maintain, and improve software simulations, tools, and scripts.
  • Plan and oversee the design, integration, analysis, and documentation of GN&C products.
  • Conduct and analyze 6-DoF Monte Carlo simulations.
  • Perform trade studies and/or sensitivity analyses concerning launch vehicles, landers, and spacecraft.
  • Create, edit, and debug software using Matlab, Simulink, and Simscape.
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports and/or briefings, including result visualizations.
  • Draft and review engineering and software documentation.

Qualifications:

A degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or a related discipline is required. A degree from an ABET-accredited institution is preferred. Typical experience requirements include a PhD with at least 4 years of experience, a master's with at least 8 years of experience, or a BS with at least 10 years of experience.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in providing technical leadership, planning, task tracking, and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Ability to derive multi-body spacecraft dynamics equations of motion, including both nonlinear and linear state equations, and integrate subsystem models into larger simulations.
  • Expertise in modeling, simulating, and analyzing the performance of launch vehicles, spacecraft, and/or landers.
  • Experience in software development, verification, and validation.
  • Modeling of spacecraft components/subsystems including Thrust Vector Control (TVC) actuators, Reaction Control System (RCS) thrusters, slosh, pogo, rigid and/or flexible body dynamics, and/or sensors.
  • Proficiency in programming with Matlab, Simulink, Simscape, and C/C++.
  • Experience conducting trade studies, sensitivity analyses, and/or Monte Carlo simulations related to launch vehicles, landers, and/or spacecraft.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated, capable of independently managing projects from inception to completion with minimal oversight.
  • Ability to lead and collaborate effectively with team members, both locally and remotely across various facilities or vendors.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Modeling of lander descent and touchdown dynamics.
  • Design and development of flight control systems, including TVC and RCS/Phase plane.
  • Analyzing system performance in time and frequency domains (Nichols, Bode, Nyquist, Root Locus, etc.) using parametric, Monte Carlo, and statistical techniques.
  • Programming in additional languages such as Python.
  • Familiarity with trajectory and orbital dynamics.
  • Experience in creating animations/visualizations from results of 3-DoF/6-DoF simulations using tools like Unreal Engine, Satellite Tool Kit (STK), etc.
  • Model-based design experience.
