Overview:
The Space Exploration Group (JSEG) Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) team is a high-performing unit engaged in the design and integration of GN&C systems for a range of projects, from CubeSats to NASA's Space Launch System (SLS). We are seeking highly qualified individuals to support the design, development, and oversight of the Human Lander Systems Program within the Control Systems Design and Analysis branch.
Responsibilities:
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Overseeing the development, verification, and validation of control systems for launch vehicles, spacecraft, and landers.
- Modeling, simulating, and analyzing the performance and stability of control systems, including during touchdown.
- Collaborating with HLS partners to understand their design/test data and potentially participating in their tests.
- Analyzing flight data from HLS partners and presenting findings to management.
- Mentoring junior engineers in control system modeling, simulation, and analysis.
- Addressing complex issues related to the design, development, analysis, integration, evaluation, testing, and verification of control systems.
- Developing and improving software simulations, tools, and scripts.
- Conducting and analyzing 6-DoF Monte Carlo simulations.
- Performing trade studies and sensitivity analyses related to control systems.
- Creating and debugging software in Matlab, Simulink, and Simscape.
- Preparing and presenting technical reports and visualizing results.
- Reviewing engineering and software documentation.
Qualifications:
A degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or a related field is required. A degree from an ABET-accredited institution is preferred. Typical experience requirements include a PhD with at least 4 years of experience, a master's with at least 8 years of experience, or a bachelor's with at least 10 years of experience.
Required Skills/Experience:
- Expertise in designing and developing flight control systems and actuator allocation.
- Proficiency in analyzing system performance using various techniques.
- Experience in modeling, simulating, and analyzing launch vehicles, spacecraft, and landers.
- Familiarity with spacecraft components and subsystems.
- Programming skills in Matlab, Simulink, Simscape, and C/C++.
- Experience in software development, verification, and validation.
- Ability to perform trade studies and sensitivity analyses.
- Detail-oriented and self-motivated, capable of working independently.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience in mentoring junior engineers.
Desired Skills/Experience:
- Ability to derive spacecraft dynamics equations and integrate subsystem models.
- Programming experience in additional languages such as Python.
- Understanding of trajectory and orbital dynamics.
- Experience with visualization tools for simulation results.
- Familiarity with model-based design.
Work Environment:
Office environment requiring clear, concise communication and professional interaction with colleagues and clients. Minimal travel may be required.
Physical Requirements:
Requires extended periods of sitting for meetings and report writing.
Attendance:
Regular attendance is essential, with minimal overtime required to meet project milestones.
Other Essential Functions:
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and make sound decisions is crucial.
