Position Overview:

The Space Exploration Group (JSEG) Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) team is a high-performing unit engaged in designing and integrating GN&C systems for a variety of projects, from CubeSats to NASA's Space Launch System (SLS). We are seeking highly qualified professionals to assist in the design, development, and oversight of the Human Lander Systems Program within the Control Systems Design and Analysis branch at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. This pivotal work will contribute significantly to the mission of returning humans to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the development, verification, and validation of control systems for launch vehicles, spacecraft, and landers.
  • Modeling, developing, simulating, and analyzing the performance and stability of control systems during critical phases, including touchdown.
  • Collaborating with HLS partners to understand their design and test data, and potentially participating in their testing activities.
  • Conducting analyses of HLS partner flight data and presenting findings to management.
  • Mentoring junior engineers in control system modeling, simulation, and analysis.
  • Tackling complex challenges related to the design, development, analysis, integration, evaluation, testing, and verification of control systems and simulations.
  • Creating, modifying, and enhancing software simulations, tools, and scripts.
  • Conducting and analyzing 6-DoF Monte Carlo simulations.
  • Performing trade studies and sensitivity analyses related to launch vehicle and spacecraft control.
  • Developing and debugging software in Matlab, Simulink, and Simscape.
  • Preparing and delivering technical reports and briefings, including data visualization.
  • Creating and reviewing engineering and software documentation.

Qualifications:

A degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or a related field is required. A degree from an ABET-accredited institution is preferred. Typical experience requirements include a PhD with at least 4 years of experience, a master's degree with at least 8 years of experience, or a bachelor's degree with at least 10 years of experience.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Expertise in designing and developing flight control systems (PID, state space, etc.) and actuator allocation techniques.
  • Experience analyzing system performance in both time and frequency domains using various techniques.
  • Proficiency in modeling, simulating, and analyzing the performance of launch vehicles, spacecraft, and landers.
  • Knowledge of spacecraft components and subsystems, including thrust vector control actuators and reaction control system thrusters.
  • Programming skills in Matlab, Simulink, Simscape, and C/C++.
  • Experience in software development, verification, and validation.
  • Experience conducting trade studies and analyses related to launch vehicle and spacecraft control.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated, capable of independently managing projects from inception to completion.
  • Able to collaborate effectively with team members, both locally and remotely.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Ability to derive multi-body spacecraft dynamics equations and integrate subsystem models into larger simulations.
  • Programming knowledge in additional languages such as Python.
  • Familiarity with trajectory and orbital dynamics.
  • Experience creating visualizations from simulation results using tools like Unreal Engine or Satellite Tool Kit (STK).
  • Experience with model-based design.

Work Environment:

Office setting. Requires clear, concise, accurate, and timely communication, both verbally and in writing. Interaction with colleagues, management, and clients is essential. Occasional travel within the domestic USA may be required.

Physical Requirements:

Requires prolonged periods of sitting for meetings and report writing. Ability to navigate between floors and buildings is necessary.

Attendance:

Standard work hours are Monday through Friday. Some overtime may be necessary to meet project deadlines. Regular attendance is crucial, and arrangements for delegating responsibilities during absences are expected.

Other Essential Functions:

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment and decision-making skills is essential. Professional grooming and attire are required.
