Position Overview:

The Substance Abuse Treatment Specialist is tasked with delivering effective interventions and services for individuals undergoing substance use treatment.

This role encompasses communication with referral sources, facilitating group, family, and individual therapy sessions, overseeing case management, collecting and documenting data, making referrals to external agencies, conducting assessments, and monitoring patient progress in alignment with treatment plans. Collaboration with the treatment team and community service providers is essential.

Educational Qualifications:


A minimum of a Master's degree is required, along with licensure and clinical status (LMSW/LCSW) from the New York State Division of Professional Licensing Services or an equivalent credential (LMHC) in a relevant field; CASAC certification is preferred.

Experience & Related Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess at least three years of professional experience in providing substance abuse treatment and interventions.

Proficiency in delivering evidence-based practices for individuals, families, and group settings is essential, including familiarity with Holistic Health Recovery Programs, Motivational Interviewing, Community Reinforcement, Family Therapy, and Seeking Safety methodologies.

Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary. Knowledge of local community resources, related service agencies, and managed care representatives is advantageous. Experience working with individuals facing co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders is a plus. The ability to engage with a diverse population and a solid understanding of cultural competencies are preferred.

Candidates must demonstrate computer proficiency, have reliable transportation, and be open to travel. Availability for full-time work (37.5 hours/week) with a flexible schedule is required, as evening or weekend engagements may occur.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct comprehensive assessments, diagnoses, and determine the appropriate level of care for patients based on LOCADTR criteria.
Provide individual, family, and group therapy sessions. Collaborate with clients and the treatment team to evaluate and prioritize patient needs. Deliver crisis management interventions as necessary.

Maintain accurate patient care documentation in accordance with the approved program format and report incidents and patient care issues following OASAS standards and agency protocols.

Develop individualized treatment plans in partnership with clients, addressing identified needs and treatment objectives. Involve family members, other healthcare professionals, and community agencies in treatment plan formulation when appropriate. Regularly review and update treatment plans in collaboration with clients and the treatment team. Facilitate discharge planning, ensuring appropriate referrals and follow-up at the conclusion of treatment.
Monitor clients to ensure they receive the appropriate level of care based on established criteria and their progress in treatment. Ensure all necessary documentation accompanies changes in treatment and referrals to external agencies. Confirm that clients understand and agree with any modifications to their treatment level.
Adhere to agency policies and procedures. Participate in training sessions, seminars, and in-service training to enhance skills and maintain credentials.
Contribute to the achievement of organizational objectives and actively engage as a supportive member of the treatment team.
