The Mechanical Systems Engineer will serve as a key contributor to the Mechanical Engineering program team, focusing on the mechanical design and development of data center storage solutions and their components, which include hard drives, solid-state drives, cooling systems, power units, and high-speed electronic interfaces. Given the intricate relationships among these systems, the ideal candidate should have extensive mechanical engineering knowledge, including expertise in Finite Element Analysis (FEA), design for shock and vibration compliance, and proficiency in tolerance analysis methodologies to inform design decisions. Additional design considerations may encompass thermal management, electromagnetic interference reduction, and acoustic performance. The engineer may operate as an individual contributor across various projects and may oversee the efforts of other team members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Mechanical Engineering project lead in mechanical design and analysis, collaborating with peers on design initiatives as part of the development team.
  • Lead and engage in design reviews, manage schedules, address issues, and coordinate with both domestic and international suppliers and manufacturing partners.
  • In collaboration with a lead engineer, develop and implement test plans, culminating in comprehensive test reports that validate design integrity for assigned responsibilities.
  • Participate in cross-functional project teams that include engineers from electrical, mechanical, firmware, and manufacturing disciplines, while also mentoring and enhancing the skills of junior engineers.
  • Design and analyze mechanical systems through both theoretical and empirical approaches, influence packaging design, and utilize the engineering change management system to formally release design content into Agile.
  • Conduct feasibility assessments and testing on new and modified designs, guiding support personnel in detailed design preparation, testing, and prototype development. Provide design specifications to packaging engineering for documentation and design purposes.
  • Utilize existing knowledge or learn to use tools such as JIRA, Agile, and Microsoft Office applications like Outlook and MSTeams.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, with a minimum of 7 years of experience in product development within computing, storage, or similar sectors.
  • The role requires an individual with exceptional creative design and technical capabilities, strong project management skills, and a passion for achieving success, alongside extensive experience with SolidWorks.
  • Proficient working knowledge of CAD systems (SolidWorks preferred) is essential.
  • Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and/or finite element analysis (FEA) is advantageous. Experience with various analysis software is a plus.
  • Experience in structural, vibrational, thermal, and acoustic modeling and problem-solving is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with testing instruments such as accelerometers, force gauges, airflow chambers, thermal testing equipment, and structural dynamic analyzers is required.
  • Proven ability in innovative problem-solving and creativity.
