Position Summary:
Western Digital is in search of a Principal Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and analysis of high-performance storage systems and subsystems tailored for the OEM and data center sectors. This role emphasizes product design and production engineering, focusing on creating products that can endure shock, vibration, thermal, and other environmental challenges in real-world applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary resource for the Mechanical Engineering program team, overseeing the mechanical development and production engineering of data center storage systems, including hard drives, solid-state drives, fans, power supplies, and high-speed communication interfaces.
  • Utilize extensive mechanical engineering expertise, including Finite Element Analysis (FEA), to design systems that meet stringent shock and vibration criteria.
  • Engage in thermal design and analysis, electromagnetic interference mitigation, and acoustics.
  • Lead and mentor team members, ensuring effective collaboration and design reviews.
  • Manage project schedules, track issues, and coordinate with domestic and international suppliers.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive test plans, culminating in reports that validate design integrity.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs, directing support personnel in detailed design and prototype fabrication.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 8 years of product development experience in computing, storage, or related fields.
- Proficient in CAD systems, particularly SolidWorks.
- Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) is advantageous.
- Experience in structural, vibrational, thermal, and acoustic modeling is preferred.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and innovative thinking are essential.
