In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for safeguarding the well-being of all personnel, ensuring that all operations adhere to local, state, and federal safety standards. Your expertise will be crucial in identifying potential hazards and implementing effective safety measures.


Key Responsibilities

The following duties outline the core responsibilities of the SSHO, although additional tasks may arise based on project needs:

  • Maintain and organize Safety Data Sheets
  • Conduct monthly inspections of eye wash stations
  • Perform monthly checks on fire extinguishers
  • Inspect first aid kits on a monthly basis
  • Facilitate safety orientation sessions for new employees
  • Investigate all incidents and near-misses
  • Carry out daily equipment inspections
  • Enforce the safety program established by the contractor
  • Inspect work sites to identify safety issues or non-compliance
  • Ensure that the work environment is free from hazards
  • Maintain compliance with the Accident Prevention Plan
  • Obtain and display necessary burn permits
  • Conduct daily safety inspections of the site
  • Lead daily safety briefings
  • Address all safety concerns promptly
  • Intervene in any unsafe practices or processes
  • Provide training on specific safety issues as required
  • Conduct emergency drills and training
  • Verify the safety and adequacy of tools and equipment
  • Monitor the safety of all workers on site
  • Draft and review all Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs)
Qualifications

The following qualifications are typically required for the SSHO position, though some projects may necessitate additional credentials:

  • Certification in First Aid and CPR
  • Completion of a 40-hour EM course
  • Completion of a 30-hour OSHA Construction course
  • A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in construction safety as an SSHO

Applicants must be willing to undergo a background check and drug screening.
