The primary responsibility of the Senior Sterile Processing Technician is to uphold exceptional customer service standards while executing all tasks related to decontamination, preparation, assembly, sterilization, distribution, and procurement of instruments and supplies for various hospital departments. This role also involves training others and stepping in for leadership when required.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership:

In the absence of management, the Senior Technician will oversee staff and operations in sterile processing, including:
Decontamination, assembly, sterilization, case cart preparation, and supply acquisition. Continuously monitoring workflow in each designated area and making necessary adjustments. Prioritizing urgent and same-day tray needs. Managing operating room procedures. Coordinating staff schedules with supervisors to ensure adequate resources. Providing feedback to management on staff evaluations. Serving as a mentor for new hires and overseeing their progress. Assisting staff with the Instrument Tracking system. Leading quality improvement initiatives that promote ongoing education for staff. Acting as a liaison with the operating room to address immediate service gaps. Understanding High-Level Disinfection (HLD) protocols and participating in infection control and accreditation rounds. Guiding Clinical Engineering on equipment repairs and tracking work orders. Decontamination:
Capable of performing and explaining all tasks and equipment used in the Decontamination area. Scanning items upon receipt in Decontamination. Inspecting trays for sharps and reporting incidents to supervisors and the operating room. Properly disposing of biohazardous waste. Correctly tagging broken and loaner items for cleaning. Scanning trays for cleaning. Thoroughly inspecting, disassembling, and cleaning each item. Proficiently using and troubleshooting all decontamination equipment and systems. Restocking the area as needed. Assembly:
Capable of performing and explaining all tasks and equipment used in the Assembly area. Scanning items upon receipt in Assembly. Inspecting trays for sharps and reporting incidents. Returning unclean items to Decontamination through the instrument washer conveyor system. Preparing loaner sets appropriately. Scanning trays before preparation. Inspecting, disassembling, and verifying the functionality of each item. Proficiently using and troubleshooting all assembly equipment and systems. Restocking the area as needed. Sterilization:
Capable of performing and explaining all tasks and equipment used in the Sterilization area. Properly loading and unloading sterilizer racks, ensuring item integrity and labeling. Scanning items to the appropriate sterilizer and cycle. Troubleshooting issues with sterilization equipment and systems. Knowledgeable in biological indicators and testing. Sterilizing loaner sets based on case requirements. Documenting sterilization records accurately. Restocking the area as needed. Inventory Control:
Capable of performing and explaining all tasks and equipment used in the Inventory Control area. Inspecting items for integrity and labeling before distribution. Scanning items to the appropriate location. Operating elevators and other transport systems as needed. Recognizing and addressing equipment repair needs. Proficiently using inventory control systems. Communicating effectively with the operating room regarding patient needs. Understanding the courier system for item distribution. Training & Standards:
Must maintain CRCST certification and one additional certification (CIS, CER, or CHL). Capable of directing and training staff in critical decision-making. Attending relevant meetings, seminars, or conferences annually. Presenting quality assurance projects utilizing data and best practices. Well-versed in regulatory and accreditation standards. Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED required. Certifications CRCST, CIS, CER, or CHL required.

Experience: Minimum of three to five years required.

Skills and Knowledge: Candidates must be Certified Registered Central Service Technicians proficient in all departmental areas and familiar with relevant software systems.

Licenses and Certifications: Minimum of two certifications required: Certified Registered Central Service Technician, Certified Instrument Specialist, Certified Endoscope Reprocessor, or Certified Healthcare Leadership (IAHCSMM).
