The primary role of the Senior Sterile Processing Technician is to uphold the highest standards of customer service while executing all tasks related to decontamination, preparation, assembly, sterilization, distribution, and procurement of instruments and supplies for various hospital departments. You will also be responsible for training others in these processes and stepping in for Sterile Processing Leadership as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership:
In the absence of supervisory personnel, the Senior Technician will oversee staff and operations in sterile processing, including:
Decontamination, assembly, sterilization, case cart preparation, and supply management. Continuously monitoring workflow in each designated area and making necessary adjustments. Prioritizing the turnover and urgent needs of trays for same-day service. Managing operating room procedures. Overseeing staff schedules in collaboration with the supervisor to ensure adequate resource allocation. Providing feedback to management on staff evaluations. Acting as a mentor for new hires, overseeing their progress in all departmental areas. Serving as a resource for staff utilizing the Instrument Tracking system. Leading quality improvement initiatives that involve ongoing staff education. Acting as a liaison with the operating room to address immediate service gaps. Understanding High-Level Disinfection (HLD) requirements and stepping in for Infection Control, Accreditation, and monthly HLD rounds in ancillary areas. Coordinating with Clinical Engineering on critical and non-critical equipment repairs, tracking work orders, and documenting resolutions. Decontamination:
Capable of performing and explaining all tasks and equipment used in the Decontamination area. Scanning all items for Decontamination Receipt. Inspecting trays for sharps, filing incident reports when necessary, and notifying the supervisor and operating room. Properly disposing of biohazardous waste. Correctly tagging all broken and loaner items and cleaning them accordingly. Scanning trays for Decontamination Clean. Thoroughly inspecting, opening, disassembling, and manually cleaning each item. Proficiently using and troubleshooting all washer disinfectors, ultrasonics, cart washer dryers, scope machines, computers, and inventory control systems. Restocking the area as needed. Assembly:
Capable of performing and explaining all tasks and equipment used in the Assembly area. Scanning all items for Assembly Receipt. Inspecting trays for sharps, filing incident reports when necessary, and notifying the supervisor and operating room. Returning unclean items to Decontamination via the instrument washer conveyor belt system, tagging broken items for the instrument coordinator. Preparing all loaner sets together. Scanning trays for Assembly prior to preparation. Thoroughly inspecting, opening, disassembling, and checking the functionality of each item. Proficiently using and troubleshooting all washer disinfectors, ultrasonics, cart washer dryers, scope machines, heat sealers, printers, label makers, computers, and inventory control systems. Restocking the area as needed. Sterilization:
Capable of performing and explaining all tasks and equipment used in the Sterilization areas. Properly loading and unloading sterilizer racks and carriers, inspecting all items for integrity and correct labeling before sterilization. Scanning all items to the appropriate sterilizer, cycle, and container. Proficiently using and troubleshooting any issues with printers, label makers, computers, inventory control systems, sterilizers, items from the load, or biologicals. Knowledgeable in the use of biological indicators and DART Testing. Sterilizing all loaner sets together based on their respective cases and weight requirements. Accurately documenting all sterilizer records and releasing items based on the correct temperature and biological readings. Restocking the area as needed. Perioperative Inventory Control Center (PICC):
Capable of performing and explaining all tasks and equipment used in the PICC area. Inspecting all items for integrity and proper labeling before moving them from any area. Scanning all items to the appropriate case cart, room, department, or hospital. Proficiently operating elevators and dumbwaiters. Effectively using various types of case carts and recognizing any repair needs. Proficiently using and troubleshooting all printers, computers, and inventory control systems. Communicating effectively with the operating room to address patient needs. Navigating inventory control systems and EPIC with proficiency. Knowledgeable about the courier system's usage. Training & Standards:
Must maintain CRCST certification, along with one of the following: CIS, CER, or CHL. Must be capable of directing and training staff when critical decisions extend beyond standard operations. Attend at least two IAHCSMM approved meetings, seminars, or conferences annually, whether virtual or in-person. Present a Quality Assurance/Improvement project to SPD, utilizing data, lean concepts, or best practice procedures. Must be well-versed in regulatory requirements and accreditation standards. Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED is the minimum requirement. Certifications CRCST, CIS, CER, or CHL are also required.
Years of Experience: A minimum of three to five years is required.
Required Skills and Knowledge: Candidates must be Certified Registered Central Service Technicians proficient in all departmental areas, as well as in Epic, Inventory Control Systems, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
Licenses and Certifications: A minimum of two certifications is required: Certified Registered Central Service Technician, Certified Instrument Specialist, Certified Endoscope Reprocessor, or Certified Healthcare Leadership (IAHCSMM).
