The primary role of the Senior Sterile Processing Technician is to uphold the highest standards of customer service while executing all tasks related to decontamination, preparation, assembly, sterilization, distribution, and procurement of instruments and supplies for various hospital departments. This position also involves training others in these processes and stepping in for Sterile Processing Leadership as needed.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership:

In the absence of leadership, the Senior Technician is responsible for overseeing staff and operations in sterile processing, which includes:
Managing decontamination, assembly, sterilization, case cart preparation, and supply procurement. Continuously monitoring workflow in each designated area and making necessary adjustments. Prioritizing urgent trays for same-day service. Coordinating with operating room procedures. Overseeing staff schedules in collaboration with supervisors to ensure adequate resources. Providing feedback to management on staff evaluations. Acting as a mentor for new hires and facilitating their progress in all departmental areas. Serving as a resource for staff utilizing the Instrument Tracking system. Leading quality improvement initiatives that require ongoing staff education. Acting as a liaison with the operating room to address immediate service gaps. Understanding High-Level Disinfection (HLD) requirements and participating in Infection Control and Accreditation rounds. Directing Clinical Engineering on equipment repairs and tracking work orders.
Decontamination:
Proficiently performing and articulating all tasks and equipment used in the Decontamination area. Scanning items for Decontamination Receipt. Inspecting trays for sharps and filing incident reports as necessary. Properly disposing of biohazardous waste. Tagging broken and loaner items appropriately. Scanning trays for Decontamination Clean. Manually cleaning and inspecting each item thoroughly. Effectively using and troubleshooting all relevant equipment and systems. Restocking the area as needed. Assembly:
Proficiently performing and articulating all tasks and equipment used in the Assembly area. Scanning items for Assembly Receipt. Inspecting trays for sharps and reporting any findings. Returning unclean items to Decontamination through the designated systems. Preparing loaner sets as required. Scanning trays for Assembly preparation. Inspecting and ensuring the functionality of each item. Effectively using and troubleshooting all relevant equipment and systems. Restocking the area as needed. Sterilization:
Proficiently performing and articulating all tasks and equipment used in the Sterilization area. Loading and unloading sterilizer racks while ensuring proper labeling. Scanning items to the appropriate sterilizer and cycle. Troubleshooting any issues with sterilization equipment. Knowledgeable in the use of biological indicators and testing. Documenting sterilization records accurately. Restocking the area as needed. Inventory Control:
Proficiently performing and articulating all tasks and equipment used in the Inventory Control area. Inspecting items for integrity and proper labeling. Scanning items to the appropriate case cart or department. Operating relevant equipment as needed. Communicating effectively with the operating room to meet patient needs. Navigating inventory control systems proficiently. Understanding the courier system for logistics.
Training & Standards:
Maintaining required certifications and participating in ongoing education. Directing and training staff in critical decision-making processes. Engaging in professional development opportunities. Presenting quality improvement projects utilizing data and best practices. Staying informed on regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED is required. Certifications CRCST, CIS, CER, or CHL are mandatory.

Experience: A minimum of three to five years of relevant experience is required.

Skills and Knowledge: Candidates must be Certified Registered Central Service Technicians with proficiency in all departmental areas and familiarity with relevant software.

Licenses and Certifications: A minimum of two certifications is required, including Certified Registered Central Service Technician and others as specified.
