Position Title: Residential Support Counselor

Available Shifts: Day, Swing, and Overnight

Facility Type: Licensed and Non-Licensed, DOJ and/or CDSS Background Clearance Required

Note: This is an on-call relief position, with a maximum of 20 hours per week, Non-Benefited, Non-Union role.



Position Responsibilities

The Residential Support Counselor is responsible for providing support and counseling services to adults facing psychiatric, substance abuse, and/or HIV-AIDS related challenges. The role involves advocating for clients and addressing their treatment and rehabilitation needs. Our services are grounded in the philosophy of social rehabilitation, emphasizing the teaching of daily living skills in a nurturing environment.

Key Duties Include:

  • Conducting intake interviews and assisting in the development, implementation, and discharge planning of client treatment plans.
  • Assessing the clinical needs of resident clients.
  • Evaluating clients for potential crisis situations and determining appropriate interventions.
  • Facilitating individual and group counseling sessions as assigned.
  • Monitoring and documenting clients' progress towards their individual goals.
  • Recording clinical notes and conducting hourly rounds to comply with Medi-Cal standards and licensure requirements.
  • Providing primary supervision and support to residential clients during shifts.
  • Serving as a role model by guiding clients in daily living skills, self-care, interpersonal interactions, and constructive time management.
  • Facilitating and supervising clients in household chores, meal preparation, and group activities.
  • Ensuring clients are connected with primary care providers and assisting them in accessing community resources.
  • Participating in staff meetings and shift change discussions.
  • Maintaining professional boundaries with clients and colleagues.
  • Completing the agency's requirement of 30 hours of staff development training annually.
  • Demonstrating the ability to work effectively at a San Francisco worksite, post-COVID.
  • Promoting the agency's mission, purpose, and values in interactions with both internal and external partners.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • All direct care staff must have graduated from high school or possess a GED and have at least one (1) year of full-time experience, or its part-time equivalent, in a program serving individuals with mental disabilities. This experience must involve direct service provision to clients.
  • The following programs require a DOJ clearance: Hummingbird Valencia, Hummingbird Potrero, Leland House, Ferguson Place, Grove Street House, Odyssey House, Robertson Place, San Jose Place, and Baker Street House.
