This role will be filled at the Emergency Communications Operations Specialist I level, Grade 15, with a starting salary of $51,579.

This position is integral to the Department's Emergency Communications Center (ECC).

The Operations Specialist is tasked with providing high-quality emergency communication services to the community, as well as delivering precise and timely dispatch support to law enforcement and emergency response teams.

This role demands exceptional attention to detail, the ability to multitask, and strong communication skills in a dynamic environment.


Key Responsibilities:
Responding to 9-1-1 emergency calls.

Coordinating the dispatch of law enforcement and emergency response teams using a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.

This position offers a robust career advancement pathway as outlined below:

Advancement to Emergency Communications Operations Specialist II (grade 17) after demonstrating proficiency as a multi-discipline public safety call taker with a minimum of five (5) months experience as a Specialist I, accompanied by a 10% salary increase.

Advancement to Emergency Communications Operations Specialist III (grade 19) after achieving proficiency in a single discipline public safety dispatch with at least three (3) months experience as a Specialist II, also with a 10% salary increase.

Advancement to Specialist IV (grade 20) after achieving proficiency in all disciplines of public safety dispatch with a minimum of twelve (12) months experience as a Specialist III, resulting in a 5% salary increase.

Advancement to Senior Emergency Communications Operations Specialist (grade 21) after 24 months as a Specialist IV, with an additional 5% salary increase.


Qualifications:
Applicants must possess the ability to:
Work at various locations as required.
Be available for holidays, weekends, and shifts during days, evenings, or overnight hours.
Adapt to last-minute schedule changes and work mandatory overtime.
Operate under close supervision, with daily performance evaluations, particularly during the training phase.
Exhibit excellent customer service skills, managing interactions with distressed individuals over the phone in a calm and respectful manner.
Work under continuous electronic monitoring, as all communications will be recorded.

Experience:
No prior experience is required.

Education:

Applicants must provide proof of high school graduation or completion of a recognized High School Certificate in the state of Maryland prior to employment.


Licensure:
Upon completion of the probationary period:

Maintain CPR certification; obtain certifications in Law Enforcement Dispatch, Fire Dispatch, and Emergency Medical Dispatch Protocol Systems; secure a State of Maryland Emergency Medical Dispatch license; and achieve METERS/NCIC certification.


Selection Process:
All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be scheduled for a computerized examination. Successful candidates will then proceed to a selection interview, where they will be rated as Well-Qualified or Qualified. Well-Qualified candidates will advance in the selection process.
