Position Overview

The role of Legal Counsel I involves providing legal services for the Business and Public Filings Division of the Office of the Texas Secretary of State. This position is suited for individuals at the entry-level to those with moderate experience, depending on the classification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and process various legal documents mandated by law for submission to the agency.
  • Engage with the legal community and the public through various communication methods, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Offer guidance to team members on interpreting and applying legal standards and agency regulations.
  • Support the appointment of notaries public and manage specific occupational registrations.
  • Participate in training initiatives for staff and assist in public presentations.

Essential Duties

  • Respond to inquiries from the public and agency personnel regarding legal obligations for business documentation.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on relevant statutes and administrative guidelines.
  • Evaluate applications for trademark and service mark registrations.
  • Assist in managing requests for public information and subpoenas.
  • Draft and revise legal documents for administrative hearings and represent the agency when necessary.

Qualifications

Education: Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Licensure: Must be licensed to practice law in Texas and in good standing with the State Bar.

Experience: Up to one year of legal experience for Attorney I; one to two years for Attorney II.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in legal research and analysis, with familiarity in using legal research tools.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and meet deadlines.
  • Competent in using Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Texas business law, trademark law, and administrative law.
  • Experience in customer service or client relations.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
