Position Overview

The City of Chesapeake is in search of a meticulous and analytical individual to join our Budget Department as a Budget Analyst. This role is ideal for those who possess a strong affinity for data interpretation and public finance. The successful candidate will be part of a dedicated team that supports over 40 City departments in the formulation of an annual operating budget and Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) exceeding $2 billion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough research and analysis of economic and financial data pertinent to the operational and capital budgets of the City.
  • Prepare and present informed recommendations to management regarding resource requests from assigned departments.
  • Perform detailed analytical reviews of resource requests to ensure alignment with budgetary constraints.
  • Engage with department personnel to inquire about operational and management functions, while maintaining accurate financial and performance records.
  • Evaluate forecasts of future expenditures and revenues, assessing economic conditions and trends that may impact the City’s funding capabilities.
  • Facilitate communication across various departments, providing management with strategic recommendations.
  • Audit and summarize budgetary and revenue data to support decision-making processes.
  • Coordinate research initiatives, including the distribution and collection of surveys related to budgetary concerns.
  • Participate in meetings to share information and attend professional development opportunities to enhance skills.
  • Contribute to budget-related committees and assist in resolving unforeseen funding challenges.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the Budget Department's objectives.

Qualifications:

Educational Background: A bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, economics, public finance, or a closely related field is required. Candidates with a background in policy analysis and strong quantitative skills are preferred.

Experience: A minimum of two years of relevant, full-time equivalent experience is necessary.

Additional Requirements: Candidates should be prepared to work beyond standard hours as needed to address departmental requirements and city-wide emergencies.
