Job Title: Maintenance Operator

Are you looking for a challenging and rewarding career in highway maintenance and construction? The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking experienced individuals to join our team as Maintenance Operators.

Job Summary:

We are looking for individuals who are able to operate power tools and heavy equipment, and perform manual labor. As a Maintenance Operator, you will be responsible for responding to emergency roadway and severe weather events, attending work zone training, and performing traffic control.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
  • Attend work zone training, prepare work zones, and perform traffic control
  • Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques, including identifying workplace safety hazards, making suggestions for improvement, and wearing proper personal protection equipment
  • Participate as a working team member performing manual labor, including clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
  • Complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance, and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment
Requirements:
  • Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, and methods
  • Demonstrated experience in equipment operation comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
  • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter
