Role of Clinical Pharmacists

Clinical pharmacists are responsible for implementing medication therapy for patients and monitoring their care to ensure safe, effective, and economical treatment. This encompasses the preparation of medications, involvement in the drug distribution process, monitoring drug therapy, providing drug information to patients and healthcare providers, and delivering clinical pharmacy services while resolving medication-related issues for individual patients as well as within the medication use framework.

Clinical pharmacists must collaborate effectively as team members, communicate clearly and professionally with all pharmacy patients, their families, and staff members, while providing outstanding customer service during interactions with patients, visitors, family members, staff, colleagues, and vendors.

Clinical pharmacists are also expected to mentor trainees within the department, including students, interns, residents, or new staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the medication use process, including the preparation and dispensing of medications in accordance with medication use policies and all applicable laws, regulations, and standards in pharmacy practice. Address challenges within the medication use process for patients and the organization.
  • Evaluate relevant drug information and literature resources, providing effective communication to diverse audiences, including patients, other healthcare professionals, and peers.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives within the organization and department to enhance patient care, the medication use process, and pharmacy operations.
  • May supervise daily workflows to ensure the completion of tasks assigned to pharmacists and those under their supervision (e.g., technicians, residents, students, or interns).
  • Educate and mentor residents, students, interns, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals while supervising technicians, residents, interns, or trainees in their job responsibilities.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Ability to perform essential job functions as outlined in the position description.
  • Willingness and capability to train department trainees (e.g., students, residents, new staff).
  • Ability to assess patient data and provide care in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to deliver care appropriate to the age of patients served in their assigned unit.
  • Understanding of life span growth and development principles, with the ability to assess patient data and provide care as outlined in departmental policies and procedures.
Qualifications

Required

  • Advanced degree (PharmD or MS) or equivalent clinical practice experience.
  • Proven effective communication and computer literacy skills.
  • Additional qualifications may be necessary depending on the specific area of assignment for the pharmacist. Examples may include basic or advanced life-support training, residency training, or certifications.
Licenses Required

  • Current licensure to dispense controlled substances in the State of Utah.
  • One of the following:
  • Current time-limited license to practice as a Pharmacist in the State of Utah, valid only during designated state emergencies.
  • Current Pharmacist license in the State of Utah.
  • Additional licensing requirements as determined by the hiring department.
Preferred Qualifications

  • PGY1 Pharmacy Residency
  • PGY2 in a relevant acute care specialty or equivalent experience
Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • This position involves light work that may require exerting up to 20 pounds and may consistently involve light tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving objects. The role requires standing for extended periods and is not exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
