Clinical Role

Clinical pharmacists are responsible for the medication therapy management of patients, ensuring safe, effective, and economically viable treatment options.

This encompasses the preparation and dispensing of medications, participation in the drug distribution process, monitoring of drug therapies, provision of drug information to patients and healthcare providers, and addressing medication-related issues for individual patients as well as within the broader medication use framework.

Clinical pharmacists are also expected to mentor and collaborate with trainees within the department, including students, interns, and residents.

Key Responsibilities


Oversee the medication use process, ensuring compliance with medication use policies and all relevant laws, regulations, and standards governing pharmacy practice.

Address and resolve issues related to the medication use process for both patients and the organization.


Evaluate and utilize appropriate drug information and literature resources, delivering effective communication to diverse audiences, including patients and other healthcare professionals.


Engage in quality improvement initiatives within the organization and department to enhance patient care, optimize the medication use process, and improve pharmacy operations.

May supervise daily operations to ensure the efficient completion of tasks assigned to pharmacists and their supporting staff (e.g., technicians, residents, students, or interns).


Provide education and training to residents, students, interns, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals, while supervising the work of technicians and trainees.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Advanced degree (PharmD or MS) or equivalent clinical practice experience.

Proven communication skills and proficiency in computer applications.

Additional qualifications may be necessary based on the specific area of practice assigned to the pharmacist. Examples of additional qualifications could include basic or advanced life-support training, residency training, or specialized certifications.

Licenses Required

Current licensure to dispense controlled substances in the State of Utah.

One of the following:

- Current time-limited license to practice as a Pharmacist in the State of Utah, valid only during specified emergencies.

- Current Pharmacist license in the State of Utah.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of residency training.
