Program & Organization Overview
The Schools, Parents, and Community Engaged (SPACE) Program is dedicated to providing essential support to African students, their families, and educational institutions. Our mission is to create nurturing environments where children feel secure, valued, and prepared to thrive academically. We collaborate closely with African immigrant families across various educational settings, ensuring that we address their unique needs and challenges.
Our organization, the Center for African Immigrants and Refugee Organization (CAIRO), is committed to bridging the achievement gap for African immigrant youth in Oregon. We strive to foster inclusive spaces that promote learning and community engagement.
Position Summary
As a SPACE Agent, you will serve as a cultural liaison, facilitating the effective implementation of the SPACE Program. Your role will involve working alongside educational staff, families, and community members to develop initiatives that enhance academic performance, enrichment opportunities, and recreational activities. You will cultivate strong relationships with school leaders and ensure that our services are culturally attuned to the diverse needs of students across elementary, middle, and high schools.
This is a full-time, non-exempt role within the Beaverton School District. The position requires availability Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with occasional evening and weekend commitments for community events.
Preferred Qualifications
We particularly encourage applications from individuals fluent in Somali and/or Swahili, as effective communication with families is essential.

Key Responsibilities
- Engage with assigned schools four days a week during the academic year.
- Handle administrative duties, including organizing parent and community meetings, data entry, and drafting work plans.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation as required by CAIRO.
- Manage a caseload of students, assessing their needs and developing tailored engagement strategies.
- Facilitate parent engagement through home visits and communication regarding student performance.
- Collaborate with teachers and school administration to address student needs and enhance outreach efforts.
- Plan and execute events and workshops in collaboration with SPACE staff.
- Contribute to the development of training sessions for educators and district leaders.
Qualifications & Skills
- Demonstrated motivation, energy, and responsibility, serving as a positive role model.
- Minimum of two years of experience working with African students and families.
- Fluency in English and at least one African language or Arabic, with a preference for Somali, Swahili, or Tigrinya.
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with parents, staff, and the community.
- Commitment to the mission of the SPACE Program and dedication to educational equity.
- Experience in facilitating workshops and community forums.
- Passion for working with children and supporting their educational journeys.
Education
Some college coursework in relevant fields is required; an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related discipline is preferred.
Work Environment
- Regular physical activity, including standing, walking, and interacting with children.
- Frequent use of office equipment, including computers and telecommunication devices.
- Travel within Washington and Multnomah County may be necessary.
