Sterile Processing Coordinator

The Sterile Processing Coordinator is a critical role at Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital, responsible for overseeing and coordinating the activities of the Sterile Processing department. This position requires a high level of expertise in sterile processing, decontamination, and sterilization techniques, as well as excellent communication and leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities- Coordinate and assign processing services to ensure efficient and effective operation of the Sterile Processing department.
- Ensure instruments and supplies are decontaminated and reprocessed in a timely manner.
- Serve as a primary resource for staff in all areas of service performed by the department.
- Maintain consistent and continuous workflow between the Operating Room (OR) and Sterile Processing.
- Communicate effectively with interprofessional healthcare team members, including OR staff, to provide timely sterile products, trays, and case carts.
- Coach staff in effective verbal, non-verbal, and written communication.
- Initiate recommendations for improvement of employee engagement scores.
- Coordinate daily interface between sterile processing, surgery, and materials management.
- Anticipate needs and ensure all supplies or instrumentation not routinely available within the department are obtained and ready prior to scheduled surgery cases.
- Plan and monitor staffing levels to ensure appropriate staffing at all times.
- Regulate scheduling and department staff assignments based on department needs.
- Provide daily reporting to management of needs, issues, and important information necessary to ensure department success.
- Serve as primary quality assurance resource for the department through periodic set audits.
- Review and revise policies and procedures to reflect industry standards and recommended practices for sterile processing.
- Assure department performance follows Houston Methodist policies and procedures and guidelines/standards from pertinent regulatory agencies.
- Continuously assure the effectiveness of the sterilization process using internal, external, and biological monitoring systems.
- Ensure accurate tracking of all instrumentation in conjunction with the SP Liaison for specific service lines.
- Maintain and record accurate recordings of sterile area environment requirements per AAMI, OSHA, and/or AORN guidelines.
- Monitor, read, document, and interpret all parameters for all types of sterilizers to ensure proper function.
- Monitor staffing levels against budgeted targets and adjust to meet goals.
- Keep management informed and involved to proactively address staffing or other employee issues.
- Maintain the shift's monthly schedule and daily shift assignments, provide input on staff performance evaluation, and assist in the development of the department budget's needs.
- Collaborate with Materials Management to identify supply needs and ordering of non-sterile items in need of processing.
- High School diploma or equivalent education.
- Six years of Sterile Processing experience in an acute care hospital.
- CRCST - Certified Registered Central Service Technician (HSPA) or CSPDT - Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CBSPD) or CIS - Certified Instrument Specialist (HSPA) or CSIS - Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist (CBSPD) within 1 year.
- Advanced knowledge of infection control, decontamination, and sterilization techniques.
- Knowledge and ability to operate, troubleshoot, and train staff on all departmental equipment.
- Proficiency in utilization of basic computer programs such as Microsoft Office and electronic instrument tracking system.
