About the Position

The Director of Employee Relations plays a critical role in supporting the university's mission by developing and implementing effective employee relations strategies. This position oversees the employee relations function, team, and programs at George Mason University, ensuring a positive and productive work environment for all employees.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise employee relations staff and manage employee relations cases, including disciplinary procedures and grievances.
  • Provide confidential assistance to university employees and leadership to help resolve work-related problems and proactively avoid potential issues.
  • Interpret federal, state, and university laws and policies related to employment law and procedures.
  • Serve on various university committees, including the Campus Threat Assessment Team and the Emergency Operations Group.
  • Participate in training and development programs to enhance expertise in areas such as mediation and dispute resolution.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Progressively responsible HR experience, including supervision of others, program development, and significant work with teams or cooperative groups.
  • Knowledge of mediation and dispute resolution techniques, as well as applicable laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to handle complex, sensitive issues in a professional and confidential manner.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Terminal degree in a related field.
  • JD preferred, but not required.
  • Experience in higher education and faculty matters.
  • Knowledge of state classified grievance processes and alternative dispute resolution.
  • Related professional certification, such as SPHR and/or SHRM-SCP.
