Position Overview:

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the guidance of the Principal Investigator (PI) or their designated representative, the Laboratory Research Specialist offers essential operational assistance to the research facility. The Specialist will conduct experimental research as outlined by the PI.

This position is open to various ranks (there are 4 levels of Laboratory Research Specialist) - candidates will be appointed to the level that aligns with their qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Laboratory Research Specialist I:

  • Conduct laboratory experiments and may oversee a singular research initiative.
  • Utilize all relevant software and equipment for experiments.
  • Analyze data, draw conclusions, and determine subsequent actions under the supervision of the PI or their delegate.
  • Maintain precise records and may adjust protocols with the PI's approval.
  • Review literature, publications, and grants pertinent to assigned projects.
  • Document results in accordance with established laboratory, sponsor, and institutional protocols.
  • Assist in data analysis and/or mathematical computations.
  • Keep a detailed laboratory notebook following standard practices.
  • Present findings during laboratory or group meetings.
  • Monitor laboratory inventory levels and place orders as necessary.
  • Prepare and label buffers, media, solutions, etc.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and infection control standards.
  • Receive training on IACUC, IRB, EHS, and Radiation safety protocols.
  • Comply with all relevant state, federal, institutional, and sponsor policies and agreements.
  • Support in identifying challenges and proposing solutions.
  • Assist in drafting standard operating procedures in line with EHS regulations specific to the laboratory.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Laboratory Research Specialist II:

Responsibilities include those listed above plus:

  • May assist in training new laboratory personnel.
  • Support in drafting standard operating procedures in compliance with EHS regulations specific to the laboratory.
  • May assist in drafting manuscript sections.

Laboratory Research Specialist III:

Responsibilities include those listed above plus:

  • Conduct complex laboratory experiments and may oversee one or more independent research projects.
  • Perform comprehensive data analysis and/or mathematical computations.
  • Compile and present data in a format suitable for publication according to PI specifications.
  • May manage laboratory inventory levels and place orders as needed; negotiate with suppliers to optimize resources.
  • Monitor laboratory equipment service contracts and maintenance schedules.
  • May oversee general laboratory operations, including personnel, procedures, and projects.
  • May create new protocols and/or modify existing ones, as necessary, with PI approval.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks or procedures simultaneously with attention to detail.
  • Perform duties and experiments independently.
  • Provide training for new laboratory personnel.
  • May oversee laboratory expenditures in accordance with budget guidelines provided by the PI or their designee.
  • May assist with budget and operational aspects of grant and contract funding.

Laboratory Research Specialist IV:

Responsibilities include those listed above plus:

  • This role will significantly contribute to the management of the research program and will engage in various aspects of research projects and laboratory maintenance activities.
  • Independently design and execute multiple complex laboratory experiments.
  • Interpret data, draw conclusions, and determine next steps with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Maintain laboratory inventory levels and place orders as necessary.
  • Manage laboratory equipment service contracts and coordinate maintenance schedules.
  • Monitor and enforce all safety regulations and infection control standards.
  • Identify and draft standard operating procedures in compliance with EHS regulations specific to the laboratory.
  • Train on IACUC, EHS, and Radiation safety protocols.
  • Oversee daily laboratory operations, including personnel, procedures, and projects.
  • Identify challenges, propose solutions, and implement appropriate actions.
  • Develop and implement new protocols and/or modify existing ones, as necessary, with PI approval.
  • Mentor and train laboratory personnel on proper laboratory conduct and techniques.
  • Manage laboratory expenditures in accordance with budget guidelines provided by the PI or their designee.
  • Assist with budget and operational aspects of grant and contract proposals.
  • Negotiate with vendors to optimize available resources.
  • Contribute independently to writing sections for manuscripts and grants.
  • Direct the activities of research support staff.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

Laboratory Research Specialist I:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biological or Natural Science, or equivalent experience.
  • Basic understanding of laboratory safety and protocols.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to analyze data in a quantitative and objective manner.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Laboratory Research Specialist II:

  • Requirements noted for Specialist I plus:
  • 18 months of relevant research experience with a Bachelor's Degree in Biological or Natural Science or 0 years with a related Master's Degree.

Laboratory Research Specialist III:

  • Requirements noted for Specialist I plus:
  • 3+ years of relevant research experience with a Bachelor's Degree in Biological or Natural Science or 1 year relevant research experience with a related Master's Degree.

Laboratory Research Specialist IV:

  • Requirements noted for Specialist I plus:
  • 5+ years of relevant research experience with a Bachelor's Degree in Biological or Natural Science or 3+ years relevant research experience with a related Master's degree.

Additional Information:

We are seeking highly motivated candidates to join our research team. Recent advancements in oncology have highlighted the effectiveness of targeted therapies that inhibit critical tumor-driving proteins or processes. A primary objective of our laboratory is to uncover the molecular mechanisms vital for the development and progression of specific carcinomas, with the aim of informing innovative treatment strategies for these malignancies. Our research employs a combination of in vivo studies utilizing genetically engineered models, cell culture assays performed on primary cell cultures and cancer cell lines, as well as molecular biology and biochemical techniques to address these critical questions.

Candidates should possess a recent bachelor's degree in biology or a related field. Individuals with a Ph.D. or M.D/Ph.D. in Cancer Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, or a related discipline are encouraged to apply.
