Position Overview:
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the guidance of the Principal Investigator (PI) or their designated representative, the Laboratory Research Specialist is responsible for providing essential operational support within the research environment. This role involves executing research experiments as outlined by the PI.
This is an open-level position, allowing for the hiring of candidates at various ranks based on their experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Laboratory Research Specialist I:
- Conduct laboratory experiments and may oversee a singular research initiative.
- Utilize relevant software and equipment for experimental procedures.
- Analyze data, draw conclusions, and determine subsequent actions under the supervision of the PI or their delegate.
- Maintain precise records and may adjust protocols with the PI's approval.
- Review literature, publications, and grants pertinent to assigned research projects.
- Document results in accordance with established laboratory, sponsor, and institutional protocols.
- Assist in data analysis and mathematical computations.
- Keep a detailed laboratory notebook following standard practices.
- Present research findings during lab or group meetings.
- Monitor laboratory inventory levels and place orders as necessary.
- Prepare and label buffers, media, and solutions.
- Adhere to safety regulations and infection control standards.
- Complete training on IACUC, IRB, EHS, and radiation safety protocols.
- Comply with all relevant state, federal, university, and sponsor policies.
- Support the identification of challenges and propose solutions.
- Assist in drafting standard operating procedures in line with EHS regulations.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Laboratory Research Specialist II:
Responsibilities as noted above, plus:
- May assist in training new laboratory staff.
- Support the drafting of standard operating procedures in compliance with EHS regulations.
- May contribute to manuscript drafting sessions.
Laboratory Research Specialist III:
Responsibilities as noted above, plus:
- Conduct complex laboratory experiments and may manage one or more independent research projects.
- Perform comprehensive data analysis and mathematical computations.
- Compile and present data in a publication-ready format per PI specifications.
- Oversee laboratory inventory and order supplies as needed; negotiate with suppliers to optimize resources.
- Monitor service contracts for laboratory equipment and ensure maintenance is performed.
- May manage laboratory operations, including personnel, procedures, and projects.
- Create new protocols or modify existing ones with PI approval.
- Simultaneously prioritize and execute multiple tasks with attention to detail.
- Conduct experiments independently.
- Provide training for new laboratory personnel.
- May oversee laboratory expenditures in line with budget guidelines from the PI.
- Assist with budget and operational aspects of grant and contract funding.
Laboratory Research Specialist IV:
Responsibilities as noted above, plus:
- This role will significantly contribute to the management of the research program and will engage in various aspects of research projects and laboratory maintenance.
- Independently design and execute multiple complex laboratory experiments.
- Interpret data, formulate conclusions, and determine next steps with a high degree of autonomy.
- Manage laboratory inventory and order supplies as necessary.
- Oversee service contracts for laboratory equipment and coordinate maintenance activities.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and infection control standards.
- Identify and document standard operating procedures in accordance with EHS regulations.
- Train on IACUC, EHS, and radiation safety protocols.
- Oversee daily laboratory operations, including personnel, procedures, and projects.
- Identify challenges, propose solutions, and implement appropriate actions.
- Develop and implement new protocols or modify existing ones with PI approval.
- Mentor and train laboratory personnel on proper laboratory techniques and conduct.
- Manage laboratory spending in accordance with budget guidelines from the PI.
- Assist with budget and operational aspects of grant and contract proposals.
- Negotiate with vendors to optimize available resources.
- Contribute independently to writing sections for manuscripts and grants.
- Direct the activities of research support staff.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications:
Laboratory Research Specialist I:
- Bachelor's degree in Biological or Natural Science, or equivalent experience.
- Basic understanding of laboratory safety and protocols.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to analyze data quantitatively and objectively.
- Capacity to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Laboratory Research Specialist II:
- Requirements as noted for Specialist I, plus:
- 18 months of relevant research experience with a Bachelor's Degree in Biological or Natural Science or 0 years with a related Master's Degree.
Laboratory Research Specialist III:
- Requirements as noted for Specialist I, plus:
- 3+ years of relevant research experience with a Bachelor's Degree in Biological or Natural Science or 1 year of relevant research experience with a related Master's Degree.
Laboratory Research Specialist IV:
- Requirements as noted for Specialist I, plus:
- 5+ years of relevant research experience with a Bachelor's Degree in Biological or Natural Science or 3+ years of relevant research experience with a related Master's Degree.
Additional Information:
We are seeking highly motivated individuals to join our research team. Our laboratory focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the development and progression of specific cancers, with the aim of informing innovative treatment strategies.
