Technical Team Leader

San Antonio, Texas, United States Canonical - Jobs Full time
Position Overview

This role encompasses the management of a technical team dedicated to the creation of Python and Golang micro-services that drive our global software distribution platform. This system, recognized globally as the Snap Store and marketplaces, operates as a cohesive unit that comprehends essential elements of software distribution, including architectures, releases, betas, release candidates, stable releases, and branches. We are on a mission to enhance the experience of users worldwide with their open-source software by significantly broadening the spectrum of software we can deliver through this platform.

If you are passionate about clean APIs, believe in the principle that exceptional engineers deliver software consistently and calmly within an agile framework, and understand that testing is crucial for increased velocity and reliability, you will thrive in this environment.

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the engineering of a highly scalable SaaS product, particularly considering the demand on our systems when significant updates occur. Additionally, you will gain insights from Canonical's esteemed security team as we collaboratively ensure the safe delivery of this capability to our global clientele.

As an Engineering Manager at Canonical, your technical expertise is essential, but your primary focus will be on fostering an effective team and nurturing the development of your colleagues. You will engage in code development and review as a leader, but your main objective is to ensure that the entire team remains focused, productive, and unimpeded. You are expected to facilitate their growth as engineers, encourage meaningful contributions, and promote professional and personal fulfillment while collaborating effectively with colleagues and the community.

Moreover, you will be a positive force in shaping the culture, facilitating technical execution, and regularly reflecting with your team on strategy and implementation. Close collaboration with other Engineering Managers, product managers, and architects will be necessary to produce an engineering roadmap with ambitious yet attainable objectives.

We anticipate Engineering Managers to possess fluency in the programming languages, architecture, and components utilized by their team. Code reviews and architectural guidance are integral to this role. Commitment to sound engineering practices, thorough documentation, quality assurance, and performance optimization is as vital as the responsibility for equitable and transparent management, ensuring a high-performing team.

This position offers a chance to deeply understand the engineering of a highly scalable SaaS product. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to learn from Canonical's distinguished security team as we work together to deliver this capability safely to our global customers.
