San Antonio, Texas, United States Canonical - Jobs Full time
Position Overview

This role is focused on technical leadership, overseeing a team dedicated to developing microservices using Python and Golang that drive our global software distribution platform. This system, recognized as the Snap Store and various marketplaces, operates as a cohesive entity that comprehends essential elements of software distribution, including architectures, releases, betas, release candidates, and stable versions.

We are on a mission to enhance the global experience with open-source software by broadening the spectrum of applications we can deliver through this unified system. If you are passionate about clean APIs, believe in the importance of consistent software delivery within an agile framework, and understand that testing is crucial for velocity and reliability, you will thrive in this environment.

This position presents an excellent opportunity to contribute to the engineering of a highly scalable SaaS product, particularly considering the demands on our systems during significant updates. Additionally, you will have the chance to collaborate with Canonical's esteemed security team to ensure the safe delivery of our capabilities to customers worldwide.

As an Engineering Manager at Canonical, your technical expertise is vital, but your primary responsibility will be to cultivate an effective team and support the professional growth of your colleagues. You will lead by example in code development and reviews, while ensuring that your team remains focused, productive, and unimpeded. Your role will involve fostering their development as engineers, encouraging outstanding work, and promoting both professional and personal fulfillment.

Moreover, you will play a key role in shaping the company culture, facilitating technical achievements, and regularly engaging with your team to assess strategy and execution. Close collaboration with other Engineering Managers, product managers, and architects will be essential in creating an ambitious yet attainable engineering roadmap.

We expect our Engineering Managers to possess fluency in the programming languages, architecture, and components utilized by their teams. Code reviews and architectural guidance are integral to this role. Commitment to sound engineering practices, thorough documentation, quality assurance, and performance optimization is equally important, alongside the responsibility for fair and transparent management to ensure a high-performing team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a remote engineering team within your time zone.
  • Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, and constructive feedback.
  • Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams and stakeholders.
  • Actively participate in the leadership team and collaborate with other leaders.
  • Work with your team to create clean web service APIs supporting both CLI and web frontend clients using Python (and optionally Golang).
  • Engage with various teams at Canonical and the broader open-source community.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in leading modern, agile software development practices.
  • Experience in fostering a collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
  • Demonstrated ability to model sound engineering principles and contribute to team objectives.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for internal events.
  • A passion for mentoring and developing team members, with a successful track record.
  • Strong knowledge and enthusiasm for software development.
  • Focus on delivering high-quality software in a timely manner.
  • Commitment to nurturing a positive team culture.
  • Experience with agile development methodologies.
  • Proficiency in software development using Python (knowledge of Golang is a significant advantage).
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Practical experience with Linux system administration.

What We Offer

Your compensation will be determined by various factors, including geographical location, experience level, and skill set. In addition to a competitive salary, we provide a range of benefits that reflect our values:

  • Fully remote working environment.
  • Personal learning and development budget.
  • Annual compensation review.
  • Recognition rewards.
  • Annual leave and parental leave.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Opportunities for travel to meet colleagues.
  • Travel perks for long-distance company events.
