Position Overview

The Lead Consultant for Transmission Strategy will leverage comprehensive expertise in electrical transmission strategy and the application of grid technologies to evaluate grid efficiency and prepare the grid for future challenges posed by plant decommissioning and renewable energy integration. This role will oversee a diverse array of transmission and operational analyses, providing consulting services that empower clients to make informed decisions supported by both business and engineering insights.

Key Responsibilities

  • Directs the execution of a wide range of analyses and consulting services, including transmission planning and operational assessments such as power flow, transient stability, transfer capability, short-circuit analysis, voltage evaluation, harmonics assessment, electromagnetic studies, reliability evaluations, and economic dispatch related to congestion management scenarios.
  • Ensures compliance with NERC, FERC, and regional standards, policies, and procedures; oversees production costing; applies risk assessment methodologies; and ensures adherence to TPL compliance and generator interconnection protocols.
  • Guarantees the accurate utilization of industry-standard software tools such as PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, and Promod to meet client deliverables effectively.
  • Leads a team of engineers in the independent execution of transmission system planning analyses.
  • Supervises the evaluation process for the selection, adaptation, and modification of standard engineering methodologies for electric transmission system planning procedures and criteria.
  • Reviews and endorses data analysis and interpretation of engineering, financial, and economic conditions and their implications for client projects.
  • Ensures accurate life-cycle cost analysis by reviewing technical assumptions regarding capital expenditures, operational and maintenance costs, performance estimates, and economic forecasts conducted by consultants and analysts.
  • Evaluates technical and business-related risk assessments that analyze impacts associated with regulatory agency rules.
  • Reviews financial analyses completed by consultants and analysts using various computer-based tools.
  • Reviews technical reports and presentations summarizing analysis results before final delivery to clients.
  • Oversees client presentations, engineering reviews, financial assessments, and contract management for utility system design and planning.
  • Prepares and presents project budgets and cost estimates, reporting on project performance.
  • Facilitates effective communication across disciplines.
  • Supports business lines as required by client needs.
  • Provides leadership, mentorship, and guidance to junior staff.
  • Ensures adherence to QA/QC processes.
  • Complies with company and site safety protocols.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
  • Adheres to all company policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program, with a minimum of 7 years of experience in the relevant industry, particularly in power delivery planning.
  • Master's degree in engineering or business with 6 years of experience, or a PhD in Engineering or Business with 5 years of experience.
  • Prior experience in electric utility operations, planning, or consulting.
  • Extensive experience in power system planning and operations, including transient stability, short circuit, and voltage analysis; familiarity with NERC, FERC, and regional standards; production costing; risk assessment techniques; TPL compliance; generator interconnection; and harmonics analysis.
  • In-depth knowledge of electric transmission systems and planning processes.
  • Proficient in industry software such as PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, and Promod.
  • Ability to independently conduct various transmission system planning analyses.
  • Comprehensive understanding of numerous power regions and independent system operators.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team-building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and the ability to train and guide a team of engineers and analysts in transmission planning studies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while identifying critical path items to ensure timely deliverables.
  • Willingness to learn new service offerings as client needs evolve.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Willingness to travel as required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License is preferred.
