UPMC Passavant, recognized with ANCC Magnet designation, is currently seeking a Full-Time Patient Care Support Specialist to assist in our Medical Stepdown Unit.

This role is an essential step in the UPMC Inpatient Patient Care Support Career Ladder, offering pathways for ongoing growth and career progression. Title and compensation will be determined based on educational background and patient care experience.


Our Full-Time Patient Care Support Specialists typically work 36 hours per week, covering various shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Shift hours may vary by unit. Candidates with prior experience in patient care are highly preferred and encouraged to apply.



Selected candidates will be required to complete a Full-Time orientation (both classroom and unit-based) at Passavant prior to commencing their role.

Key Responsibilities:

·

Propose and support enhancements within the department.

·

Take ownership of assigned tasks and view challenges as opportunities.

·

Be mindful of how behavior impacts the efficient operation of the department.

·

Support department-focused projects and quality improvement initiatives.

·

Consistently perform core nursing assistant responsibilities, including assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, and repositioning patients. Additionally, conduct point of care testing (including blood glucose), record weights, monitor vital signs, and assist with telemetry monitor application/reapplication, among other tasks. All competencies must be achieved.

Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department.

·

Establish effective communication with other departments.

·

Build professional and respectful relationships with colleagues.

·


Contribute to unit-wide activities, including responding to call lights and telephones, delivering meal trays, and transporting patients.

·

Receive feedback and direction constructively.

Identify and communicate learning needs to the unit director.

Take proactive steps to enhance knowledge, skills, and performance.

·

Request assistance in planning and prioritizing tasks as necessary.

·

Participate in self-assessment as requested by the unit director.

Ensure safety in the workplace for both patients and self.

Provide patient care, including assisting with procedures and daily living activities.

Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.

·

Provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and report any changes in patient status.

Offer instruction to patients and their families under the RN's guidance.

·

May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per established protocols.

·

Strictly adhere to all policies and procedures related to patient care and hospital information.

·

Comply with safety policies and procedures, including standard precautions.

·

Document in the medical record according to established protocols.

·

Complete assigned tasks in a timely and efficient manner.

·

Perform clerical functions as needed within the department.

·

Act in accordance with system-wide competencies and behaviors.

·

Perform other duties as assigned.

High school diploma or equivalent required.

·


Must have either 1 year of experience, OR be enrolled in a PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR have completed a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.

·

Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician training required.

·

Successful completion of basic information systems training required.

·

Microcomputer experience preferred.

·

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

·

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.

·

Access to medications is limited to distribution to the nurse only.

Licensure/Certification/Clearances:

·

Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required.

·

CPR certification must meet AHA standards, including both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

·

Act 34 Criminal Clearance required.
