JOB OVERVIEW:
The Senior Psychiatric Nurse plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of the designated Unit.
This position is responsible for delivering expert psychiatric nursing care, which includes both personal task execution and oversight of the nursing staff's activities during their shift.
The Senior Nurse guarantees that all team members deliver high-quality and effective nursing services.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Organizes, coordinates, monitors, and assesses client care delivered by the nursing team.
- Conducts thorough assessments of client needs and prioritizes care accordingly.
- Develops and implements comprehensive client care plans.
- Facilitates psycho-educational groups using professional knowledge.
- Oversees and manages the unit effectively.
- Provides supervision to nursing staff assigned to the unit.
- Ensures accurate and timely documentation of services provided.
- Administers medications as prescribed by the physician.
- Collaborates with Nurse Administrators and RN Shift Supervisors to enhance inpatient nursing service delivery.
- Demonstrates excellent time management skills essential for effective job performance.
- Maintains legible documentation and handwriting standards.
- Assists in evaluating the performance of supervised staff.
- Accurately observes and records client behavior and activities.
- Successfully completes initial and annual training in Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (TEAM) for physical restraint and verbal de-escalation.
- Promotes a therapeutic environment in collaboration with other disciplines.
- Ensures scheduled client activities are conducted as planned.
- Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team to develop and implement treatment plans and objectives for all clients in the unit.
- Engages with clients to build therapeutic relationships and supports the achievement of treatment goals as outlined in nursing directives.
- Provides guidance and oversight to LPNs and Behavioral Technicians, demonstrating clinical skills in psychiatric and basic medical/surgical nursing.
- Maintains accuracy in observing and documenting client behavior and activities.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Strong assessment skills are vital for this role. Familiarity with a holistic approach to client care is beneficial. The ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team is essential for effective job performance. A functional understanding of relevant regulations is required. Demonstrated skills in ensuring safe and effective client care are critical. Proficient verbal and written communication skills are fundamental for success. Strong crisis intervention and conflict resolution abilities are key components of this position. Managerial or supervisory experience is necessary.
DECISION-MAKING:
Utilizes established organizational policies and procedures to guide decision-making. Employs sound judgment in fulfilling responsibilities and executing duties associated with the role.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Education: Graduation from an accredited nursing program recognized by the relevant state board.
- Experience: A minimum of six (6) years of progressive nursing experience.
TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT:
Completes all training requirements as outlined in the Individual Training Plan within the initial six months of employment and annually thereafter. Additional training and professional development may be assigned as programs evolve.
