Microbiology and Protein Biochemistry Research Specialist

Position Summary:
We are looking for a proactive and skilled Research Associate/Senior Research Associate to join our Research and Development team. This role will primarily involve contributing to our microbiology and protein biochemistry initiatives. The ideal candidate will oversee the monitoring of bioburden in materials, specifically bacteria and fungi cultures, while executing microbiological and biochemical experiments. Additionally, the successful applicant will maintain laboratory inventory and manage electronic laboratory records.
Key Responsibilities:
- Culture bacteria and fungi in specialized media to assess bioburden across various materials.
- Operate within a BSL2 microbiology laboratory, strictly adhering to safety protocols.
- Conduct biochemical and microbiological experiments as directed by project leaders.
- Ensure the maintenance and decontamination of laboratory equipment.
- Oversee the inventory of laboratory chemicals and consumables, ensuring timely replenishment.
- Prepare solutions and cell culture media as required.
- Label and dispose of hazardous materials appropriately.
- Collaborate closely with team members to achieve project goals.
- Compile detailed reports for project team meetings and group discussions.
- Maintain accurate records of all research activities, generating progress reports and presentations as needed.
- Communicate with external Contract Research Organizations (CROs) when necessary.
Qualifications:
- BSc/MSc in biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline, with a focus on bacterial cell biology and a minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience.
- Demonstrated ability to apply good laboratory practices for efficient and safe workflows.
- Basic troubleshooting skills and a keen attention to detail.
- Capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
Skills & Abilities:
Essential:
- Proficient in microbial culture techniques, particularly with bacteria and fungi.
- Fundamental knowledge of protein chemistry and biochemistry laboratory processes.
- Effective communication skills, capable of engaging with both specialists and non-specialists.
- Comfortable working autonomously and as part of a team.
- Proficient in Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or equivalent applications.
Desirable:
- Experience in a microbiology quality control laboratory.
- Familiarity with software such as GraphPad Prism, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator, NCBI, and RSCB.
- Knowledge of microbial strain maintenance and genetic manipulation techniques.
- Experience with protein expression systems and purification methods.
- Understanding of techniques like PCR, gel electrophoresis, and enzymatic assays.
- Familiarity with data analysis software or programming languages for data interpretation.
- Prior experience in managing laboratory inventory and optimizing workflow.
- Experience utilizing electronic laboratory notebooks.
