Position Summary:
We are looking for a dedicated and proficient Research Associate/Senior Research Associate to join our Research and Development team. This role will primarily focus on microbiology and protein biochemistry projects, encompassing quality control and discovery initiatives. The successful candidate will be tasked with monitoring the bioburden of materials, including bacterial and fungal cultures in BSL1/BSL2 environments, and conducting various microbiological and biochemical experiments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Culture bacteria and fungi in specialized media to assess bioburden levels in diverse materials.
- Operate within a BSL2 microbiology laboratory while strictly adhering to safety protocols.
- Conduct biochemical and microbiological experiments as directed by project leaders.
- Oversee the maintenance and decontamination of laboratory equipment.
- Manage and monitor laboratory chemical and consumable inventories, ensuring timely replenishment.
- Prepare solutions and cell culture media as required.
- Label and dispose of hazardous materials appropriately.
- Collaborate closely with team members to ensure project success.
- Compile detailed reports for project team meetings and group discussions.
- Maintain accurate records of all research activities, generating progress reports and presentations as needed.
- Communicate with external Contract Research Organizations (CROs) when necessary.
Qualifications:
- BSc/MSc in biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline, with a focus on bacterial cell biology and a minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency in good laboratory practices to ensure a safe and efficient workflow.
- Ability to troubleshoot basic laboratory issues effectively.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to consistent work practices.
- Capability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
Skills & Abilities:
Essential:
- Experience with microbial culture techniques, particularly with bacteria and fungi.
- Foundational knowledge of protein chemistry and biochemistry laboratory processes.
- Effective communication skills with both specialists and non-specialists.
- Comfortable working autonomously and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or equivalent applications.
Desirable:
- Experience in a microbiology quality control laboratory.
- Familiarity with software such as GraphPad Prism, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator, NCBI, RSCB.
- Knowledge of microbial strain maintenance and genetic manipulation techniques.
- Experience with protein expression systems and purification methods.
- Understanding of techniques like PCR, gel electrophoresis, and enzymatic assays.
- Familiarity with data analysis software or programming languages.
- Prior experience in managing laboratory inventory and ensuring operational efficiency.
- Experience with electronic laboratory notebooks.
