About the Department:
The position is situated within the Department of Computer Science, which comprises 80 full-time faculty members. The department provides a range of academic programs, including both MS and PhD tracks, alongside two undergraduate degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BS-CS) and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Computer Science (BS-ACS). About the Role:
The primary requirement for Adjunct Faculty is to deliver graduate-level instruction, with occasional opportunities for undergraduate teaching. The department administers four master's degree programs—MS in Computer Science, MS in Information Security Assurance, MS in Information Systems, and MS in Software Engineering, as well as a PhD in Computer Science. These programs cater to over 1000 students, both part-time and full-time, with more than 50 graduate courses offered each semester.
Adjunct Faculty are responsible for teaching one or more courses in the following areas (current syllabi available):
Artificial Intelligence; Cryptography; Data Mining and Machine Learning; Graphics and Visual Computing; Information and Software Security; Information Systems; Networking; Programming Languages; Software Engineering; Systems; Theoretical Computing; and User Experience Design.Courses are conducted on GMU's Fairfax campus, typically in the evening to accommodate part-time students with full-time employment. Additionally, an increasing number of courses are being offered at GMU's Mason Square campus in Arlington. Course formats may include face-to-face, online, and hybrid options.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and deliver assigned courses according to the course catalog and approved outline; Assess and grade assignments and exams promptly, aligning with course objectives; Maintain accurate and transparent student records; Support student success through regular office hours and timely email responses; Comply with university policies, including timely submission of grades; Engage in professional development to remain current in assigned courses; Uphold professional conduct and ethical standards; and Perform additional duties as assigned by contract or by the Program Director.Required Qualifications:
PhD or Master's degree with 18 graduate credits in a computing discipline; Relevant professional experience; Familiarity with a learning management system, preferably Blackboard; and Strong verbal and written communication skills.Preferred Qualifications:
Terminal degree in computer science or a closely related field; Relevant industry experience; Teaching experience at the university level; and Willingness to engage in curriculum development and evaluation with program directors.Application Instructions:
