About the Department:

The Department of Statistics comprises a dynamic team of 21 primary faculty members alongside numerous adjunct and affiliated faculty. It provides a comprehensive B.S. degree in Statistics, a Ph.D. in Statistical Science, and two M.S. degrees: Statistical Science and Biostatistics, in addition to a Concentration in Statistical Data Science within the MS Statistical Science program. Established in 1992, the department has rapidly advanced in research and scholarship, boasting a faculty recognized nationally and internationally in statistics, biostatistics, data science, and artificial intelligence. Collaborative research initiatives with leading corporations and government entities, such as INOVA Health, underscore the department's innovative potential in statistics and interdisciplinary research across various fields.

Located in the scenic Fairfax, VA campus within the high-tech corridor of Northern Virginia, the department is conveniently situated 30 minutes from downtown Washington, D.C. and Dulles International Airport. The area is known for its top-ranked high schools and offers easy access to engineering and computing departments within the College of Engineering and Computing. Additionally, on-campus faculty rental housing is available. The department is expanding its course offerings at GMU's Mason Square campus in downtown Arlington, surrounded by a vibrant array of restaurants and city life.

About the Position:

Adjunct faculty members are expected to instruct one or two undergraduate or graduate courses in Statistics at either the Fairfax or Arlington campus. Expertise in various domains of Statistics and Data Science is highly valued.

Rank and salary will be aligned with educational qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver assigned courses according to the established course catalog descriptions and approved outlines;
  • Prepare and evaluate class assignments and examinations promptly, ensuring alignment with course objectives;
  • Maintain accurate and transparent student records;
  • Support student success by holding regular office hours and responding to email inquiries in a timely manner;
  • Comply with all university administrative policies, including the timely submission of midterm and final grades;
  • Engage in professional development to remain current in the field;
  • Uphold high standards of professional conduct and ethics; and
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by contract or by the department chair or associate chair, including evaluating courses for continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Statistics or a closely related discipline prior to the commencement of this position;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; and
  • In exceptional cases, a Master's degree in Statistics or Biostatistics may be considered if accompanied by substantial teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching at the college level;
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies;
  • Expertise in data science or contemporary statistics; and
  • Experience with learning management systems.
