About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Veterans Benefits Counselor to join our team at the Arizona Department of Veterans' Services. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in empowering veterans and their families by providing access to benefits and resources.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct in-person or virtual interviews and counseling sessions with veterans and their families to determine their eligibility for various benefits.
  • Assist clients with accurately completing benefit forms, gathering supporting documents, and submitting them to the relevant authorities in a timely manner.
  • Monitor the claim process through various computer databases and ensure that all necessary documentation is in order.
  • Review claim files after a rating action to determine compliance with current laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Examine medical information, including service medical records, physical examinations, hospital reports, and post-operative reports, to determine the degree of residual disability and ensure accuracy in VA assignments.
  • Create and maintain electronic client records and upload documents into client files.
  • Prepare reports as requested by the supervisor.
  • Attend all required education and training to obtain and maintain accreditation with the VA.
  • Participate in community outreach activities to engage with service members, veterans, their family members, and citizens to disseminate information and offer agency services and referrals.
Requirements
  • Ability to obtain accreditation by the VA and certified proficient by the Arizona Department of Veterans Services within six months from the date of hire.
  • Ability to pass an extensive background investigation by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and obtain a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card through the VA.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to learn and apply Title 38 U.S.C. and Veterans Administration regulations and manuals, policies, and procedures to claims.
  • Ability to learn and apply other federal, state, and local programs, as well as military-specific programs to claims.
  • Ability to learn and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the agency.

  • Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who have a military discharge under honorable conditions.
