Job Overview

Lithic Laboratory Analyst

The Frederick, Maryland office of Goodwin & Associates, Inc. is seeking a Laboratory Analyst with expertise in pre-contact lithic artifacts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing and executing post-field processing of collections, which includes artifact check-in, cleaning, and packaging;
  • Cataloging pre-contact artifacts and generating basic analytical reports of archaeological collections for Project Managers;
  • Contributing to the development of laboratory methodologies and creating inventories for report generation;

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Preparing and coordinating samples for specialized analytical procedures such as soil flotation, residue analysis, archaeobotanical identification, and pollen analysis;
  • Documenting artifacts through photography for inclusion in technical reports, public archaeology materials, presentations, and other publications;
  • Providing mentorship and supervision to interns within the laboratory environment.

This position is primarily office/laboratory-based; however, candidates should be prepared to engage in fieldwork as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.A./B.S. (M.A./M.S. preferred) in Archaeology or Anthropology;
  • Completion of an accredited archaeological field school;
  • Experience in artifact processing, particularly in identifying and analyzing pre-contact lithic artifacts. Knowledge of historic period material culture is advantageous;
  • Proficiency with database systems such as Microsoft AccessTM and photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop is preferred;
  • Experience with Phase I, II, or III cultural resource projects is beneficial;
  • A valid Driver's License;
  • Ability to pass pre-employment assessments.

This is a full-time, salaried professional role that includes a comprehensive benefits package, which encompasses paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave; health, dental, and life insurance; as well as a generous 401(k) plan. The starting salary for this position is $44,720.00 annually, with potential variations based on educational and professional background.
