Responsibilities

The selected candidates will engage in a diverse range of resource and visitor safety tasks, which include but are not limited to: enforcing federal and state regulations, conducting vehicle and foot patrols, overseeing front country and backcountry areas, responding to emergencies, providing emergency medical assistance, conducting search and rescue operations, guiding visitors, managing wilderness areas, enforcing boundaries, safeguarding natural and cultural assets (such as wildlife, flora, archaeological sites, and historic structures), and executing wildland fire suppression efforts. Additional responsibilities may involve patrols on horseback and bicycle.

You will establish operational objectives and ensure that all personnel receive necessary training promptly; identify operational needs and advise your supervisor on programming, budgeting, training, administration, and operational assessments; and organize patrols to enhance visitor interactions, particularly in areas of concern. You will oversee and direct complex law enforcement, emergency medical, and search and rescue operations, as well as deliver emergency medical services to park visitors and residents. Furthermore, you will be involved in all facets of employee management, including performance evaluations, recognition programs, and counseling.

  • Compliance with Selective Service Registration Act is required for males.
  • Subject to pre-employment physical and drug testing.
  • Must hold a Type II or higher Law Enforcement Commission.
  • Selected individuals will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program.
  • Selected individuals must carry a firearm while on duty and maintain proficiency with it.
  • Selected individuals must not have any domestic violence convictions. Appointment will depend on successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to meet these requirements may result in termination.
  • A drug test is mandatory prior to appointment, and this position is subject to random drug testing.
  • Prior to appointment, candidates must be deemed physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform demanding physical tasks and pass a medical examination, which includes assessments of vision, hearing, cardiovascular health, and mobility of extremities. Periodic medical evaluations will be required throughout employment.
  • Candidates must pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB), which includes five components: 1) agility run; 2) bench press; 3) mile run; 4) sit and reach; and 5) body composition assessment. Candidates must pass the agility run, bench press, and 1.5-mile run in the 25th percentile.

Qualifications

Continued Requirements:

  • A valid driver's license is required for operating a government (or private) vehicle as part of your official duties. You must submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record, along with certified driving records from all States where you have held valid driver's licenses.
  • Compliance with National Park Service uniform standards is mandatory, and a uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shifts may be required.
  • New employees or supervisors in the Federal government must complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Overnight travel away from home may be required once a month.
  • Training and maintenance of a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority may be necessary.
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old.

Additional Information

This is a temporary position not to exceed one year, with the possibility of extension up to five years. This temporary role may be converted to a permanent position without further competition. Employment may be terminated at any time due to funding fluctuations, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations. A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected.
