Quality Assurance Coordinator for Sterile Processing

SUMMARY: The Quality Assurance Coordinator for Sterile Processing plays a pivotal role in ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety in the handling and sterilization of surgical instruments and materials. Reporting to the Administrative Director of Peri-Operative Services, this position is responsible for the planning, design, and oversight of various procedures related to the procurement, processing, and sterilization of surgical equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive training and certification program for sterile processing staff, focusing on best practices in decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of sterile products.
  • Maintain meticulous documentation across relevant information systems to support the training and operational procedures.
  • Collaborate closely with operating room management and staff to ensure effective processing of surgical trays and instrumentation.
  • Oversee vendor inventory management, including loaner trays, through systematic protocols and monitoring.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Healthcare, or Business Administration.
  • Certification in Sterile Processing.
  • A minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in an operating room or similar environment, with practical experience in staff education, aseptic techniques, surgical instrumentation, and materials management.

Essential Skills:

  • Demonstrated leadership and management capabilities, along with exceptional organizational and communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of decontamination and sterilization methods, surgical instrumentation, and surgical case cart management.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Establish and monitor procedures for steam heat and ethylene oxide sterilization of surgical and endoscopic equipment to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Administer and review biological control culturing procedures for sterilizers to verify operational compliance.
  • Stay updated on regulations from relevant agencies and revise operational policies to maintain compliance.
  • Implement a control system for tracking all materials and equipment processed by Sterile Processing, including recall procedures.
  • Maintain communication between perioperative leadership and Sterile Processing to ensure quality equipment processing.
  • Prepare analytical reports detailing progress, trends, and recommendations for quality improvements.
  • Coordinate and conduct training programs for staff development.
  • Develop and maintain all operational policies and procedures for Sterile Processing.
