Position Description

The Division of Geriatrics, Gerontology, and Palliative Care at the University of California, San Diego, Department of Medicine is dedicated to fostering academic excellence and diversity within its faculty, staff, and student body. We are actively seeking candidates for a tenured faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor, with a primary focus on Geroscience.

This search emphasizes the exploration of biological mechanisms of aging, aiming to devise strategies that can delay the onset of multiple age-related chronic diseases and conditions. Recent advancements in understanding the biological foundations of aging hold significant promise for developing innovative prognostic tools and treatments for age-related ailments. These endeavors necessitate interdisciplinary teams equipped with complementary expertise in translational research, clinical trials, and human cohort studies. Successful candidates will be expected to establish a robust program of high-quality externally funded research. Key focus areas include, but are not limited to: multi-omics, bioinformatics, epigenetics, and biodemography.

The Department of Medicine stands as a premier center for clinical care, research, and education. We are committed to translating laboratory discoveries into improved methods for disease detection, prevention, and treatment. As part of a research-intensive academic medical center, we offer training programs in both general internal medicine and subspecialties within an inclusive and enriching educational environment. With nearly 500 full-time faculty members and over 100 academic researchers, the Department of Medicine is the largest among the distinguished departments in the UC San Diego School of Medicine. Our Geriatrics program has received national recognition, ranking 13th out of more than 1,500 programs in the U.S. News & World Report.

The successful candidate will be expected to cultivate and sustain a high-quality, externally funded research program, provide service to the University and the broader academic community commensurate with their career stage, and contribute to a collegial and collaborative academic atmosphere that emphasizes justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. The candidate will engage in the division journal club, participate in Grand Rounds, and contribute to teaching seminar series while mentoring trainees and postdoctoral fellows, thereby enhancing the University's commitment to diversity initiatives.

The appointment at the Associate Professor level will be contingent upon the candidate's qualifications and experience. Series will include 50% Ladder Rank / 50% In-Residence with secured extramural funding or 100% Ladder Rank.

As a member of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, the appointee should be aware that there are limitations on outside professional activities, and clinical moonlighting is expressly prohibited. Additional information can be found here:
