Position Overview

The Department of Rhetoric and Writing Studies within the College of Arts and Letters at California State University is currently accepting applications for their lecturer pool.

We invite applications from potential temporary faculty who possess expertise or experience in the following domains:
  • Rhetoric and Writing Studies, which encompasses first-year composition, advanced composition, technical communication, professional writing, and business writing.
Temporary appointments may be available on either a full-time or part-time basis. Appointments from the part-time pool are frequently made just before the commencement of the academic term, necessitating that applicants be available on very short notice. The academic terms typically run from mid-August to late-December for the Fall term and from mid-January to mid-May for the Spring term. Opportunities for teaching during the Summer Sessions may also be available. Initial appointments are generally for one semester or one academic year, with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory evaluations and ongoing availability of work. Applications will remain in our applicant pool throughout the academic year in which they are submitted.

Qualifications

Criteria
  • Graduate degree in Rhetoric and Writing Studies or a closely related field.
  • Experience in university-level teaching.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the subject matter.
  • Proven experience and/or commitment to teaching and effectively engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented groups.
*Candidates must meet two or more of the eight SDSU Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria:

  1. Commitment to engaging in service with underrepresented populations within the discipline.
  2. Demonstrated understanding of barriers faced by underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline.
  3. Experience or commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students.
  4. Experience or commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research.
  5. Experience or commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of underrepresented groups.
  6. Experience or commitment to research that engages underrepresented communities.
  7. Expertise or commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration.
  8. Research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education.

  • Recent student evaluations, ideally from the past three years (new employees only).
  • Recent course syllabus and writing assignment prompt (new employees only).

  • Names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of three professional references (new employees only).
Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are determined based on professional experience and educational background by the hiring department. Most new appointees are typically hired at the Lecturer A or B rank and placed at the beginning of the salary range.

As of July 2023, the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:

Lecturer A: $5,007 - $6,359
Lecturer B: $5,925 - $12,594
Lecturer C: $6,500 - $13,831
Lecturer D: $8,184 - $14,487

In accordance with Education Code 89521, the California State University requires that employment applicants disclose any final administrative or judicial decision issued within the last seven years determining that the applicant committed sexual harassment. This requirement applies specifically to applicants who meet the minimum qualifications for the Academic or Administrative position they are applying for. Disclosures shall be provided to the California State University Center for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination for further adjudication.
