The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a prominent urban educational institution that caters to a diverse student body of approximately 21,000 individuals, representing over 60 languages spoken at home. KCKPS proudly includes Sumner Academy, recognized as the #6 top-rated secondary school in the United States and the leading secondary school in Kansas according to national rankings.

As the fifth largest school district in Kansas, KCKPS operates with a comprehensive network that includes Head Start programs, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools. Our student demographic consists of approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To effectively support our students, the district employs around 4,000 staff members, including over 1,800 educators.

OBJECTIVE:

To play a vital role within the administrative team, providing leadership in instructional practices for both students and faculty.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist the principal in the overall management of the school.
  • Act as the instructional leader for a designated Small Learning Community.
  • Uphold the policies set forth by the Board of Education.
  • Manage record-keeping duties as delegated by the principal or as dictated by professional standards.
  • Be prepared to assume the principal's responsibilities in their absence.
  • Conduct evaluations of teaching staff.
  • Engage with parents regarding student performance and behavioral matters.
  • Support the supervision of extracurricular activities.
  • Execute additional administrative tasks as assigned by the principal, including but not limited to:
  • Overseeing a small learning community;
  • Coaching collaborative teams;
  • Assisting in the development of the master schedule and student schedules;
  • Monitoring student behavior;
  • Assigning and overseeing teachers for extracurricular duties;
  • Tracking student attendance;
  • Maintaining the school calendar;
  • Coordinating with transportation services;
  • Preparing school newsletters;
  • Planning and organizing programs for students and parents;
  • Effectively enforcing school rules and expectations.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Possess or be eligible for Kansas Certification as a Building Administrator.
  • Have a minimum of five years of successful experience as a teacher at the middle or high school level.
  • Exhibit knowledge of effective instructional methods.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to collaborate as part of a team.
  • Ability to engage effectively with students and parents from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proficient in planning, organizing, and executing activities and programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to assist teachers in enhancing their classroom performance.
  • Critical thinking skills to provide constructive feedback and resolve issues related to school administration.
  • Preferred: English as a Second Language endorsement or commitment to obtain it.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to address practical problems and navigate various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Capability to interpret diverse instructions provided in written, oral, diagrammatic, or scheduled formats.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Proficient in reading, analyzing, and interpreting professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Capable of writing reports, general curriculum, and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the public.

COMMUNICATION:

Maintain open lines of communication with teachers, school personnel, and parents/guardians to foster cooperative efforts that meet the educational needs of students. Provide health services, information, and counseling effectively to enhance the well-being of the school community. Complete necessary reports and maintain confidentiality regarding educational records.

ORGANIZATION:

Keep a daily log of school/staff visits and documentation. Ensure the daily operation of the health office facility and its supplies.

Utilize available technology effectively in performing duties. Carry out other related tasks as required.

Salary: Based on KCKPS Salary Schedule

FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT

Reports to: Building Principal

Supervises: Building Staff (as assigned by the Principal)

Evaluation: Conducted in accordance with the procedures outlined by the USD #500 Board of Education.
