This leadership position is pivotal in steering the first line of defense for risk management within the Platform and Functional Technology divisions, ensuring alignment with the organization's Risk Management Framework and overarching Corporate Strategy.
This role, while primarily an individual contributor position, encompasses a broad spectrum of Technology initiatives that support Synchrony's business platforms and functional sectors. It necessitates extensive collaboration with personnel across various Synchrony departments and hierarchical levels.
The incumbent will engage closely with multiple teams within the Technology and Operations function, alongside various business units, Independent Risk Management (second line of defense), Audit (third line of defense), and senior management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and execute a risk management framework and schedule to bolster risk management and control efficiency within the Platform and Functional Technology sectors, including teams reporting to Technology Platform Leaders and Functional Technology Leaders.
- Conduct risk evaluations to identify, assess, and prioritize risk mitigation strategies in the aforementioned areas.
- Stay attuned to business strategies and industry developments to proactively recognize and address emerging risks, such as those arising from business expansion and the integration of Generative AI.
- Collaborate with management to formulate risk mitigation strategies and offer guidance on enhancing controls to ensure effective management of key risks.
- Identify critical monitoring areas and escalate issues and findings to relevant stakeholders.
- Work in partnership with cross-functional teams, including Technology leaders and product owners, to incorporate risk management considerations into the design, development, and implementation of new technologies, products, services, and processes.
- Act as a subject matter expert in operational risk management for first line of defense teams.
- Identify patterns, trends, and opportunities for improvement to enhance processes and controls, regularly reviewing incident and problem resolutions to ensure that changes and improvements to controls are executed.
- Collaborate with process owners to evaluate controls as part of the Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) process and identify any gaps in processes, risks, and control documentation.
- Prepare and deliver updates to senior leadership and relevant stakeholders regarding the status of risk management initiatives.
- Provide feedback and collaborate with Technology and Operations teams on pertinent governance documents to support first line activities and manage risk.
- Ensure compliance with enterprise standards for risk management and governance requirements.
- Lead special projects and initiatives focused on proactive risk management to ensure adherence to risk management standards.
- Partner with Technology and Operations executives to prepare for regulatory examinations and manage MRA closures.
- Promote risk awareness and enhance the overall effectiveness of risk management programs.
- Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 10 years of experience in IT, IT Risk, Operational Risk, Audit, or Compliance. Alternatively, candidates with a High School Diploma/G.E.D. and a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience will also be considered.
Demonstrated experience in regulatory compliance (e.g., FFIEC, SOX) and familiarity with industry risk management frameworks (e.g., CobIT, ITIL, NIST, ISACA) is essential.
Experience in providing consultancy and assurance services for IT strategy, policies, and governance is highly valued.
Desired Skills:
- Technical and operational expertise in Agile Software Development and IT risk management.
- Relevant certifications such as CISA, CISSP, CRISC, or CISM are preferred.
- Knowledge of compliance with consumer financial protection laws is advantageous.
- Proven ability to drive improvements across complex organizations and processes.
- Strong analytical skills with the capacity to evaluate risk/reward trade-offs.
- Excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
- Ability to work independently while knowing when to escalate issues.
