POSITION SUMMARY: The Veterinary Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians, ensuring the safety and comfort of pets during their visits. This position is vital for maintaining the continuity of high-quality veterinary care.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promote a culture of respect, learning, integrity, exceptional service, and enjoyment.
  • Prepare and sanitize examination rooms, medical tools, and surgical areas between appointments.
  • Gather initial patient data, including medical histories and vaccination records, and document this information accurately.
  • Provide comfort and restraint for pets before, during, and after procedures.
  • Record examination findings and update patient records as instructed by veterinarians.
  • Educate pet owners on general care, specific conditions, and post-procedure instructions as directed by the Veterinarian.
  • Monitor and document the physical status and vital signs of pets post-surgery.
  • Maintain cleanliness in cages, pens, and boarding areas.
  • Feed, hydrate, groom, and exercise pets during their stay.
  • Address general inquiries from clients.
  • Assist in procedures that do not require direct supervision from a Veterinarian or Veterinary Technician.
  • Conduct basic health assessments and identify signs of illness or injury under the Veterinarian's guidance.
  • Administer medications, perform routine lab tests, and educate clients on medication usage and side effects as directed.
  • Deliver professional, efficient, and compassionate care to clients while maximizing productivity.
  • Foster a collaborative work environment that ensures effective and compassionate healthcare delivery for pets.
  • Adhere to all clinic policies, quality assurance protocols, and minimum care standards.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a NAVTA-approved Veterinary Assistant program is preferred.

Experience:

  • One year of experience in a pet care environment is preferred.

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of animal care.
  • Basic understanding of pharmacology.
  • Proficient in various computer applications, including Microsoft Office.
  • Effective communication skills with a focus on customer service.
  • Basic math skills for accurate medication and fluid administration.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Empathy and compassion for animals and their owners.
  • Ability to interact professionally with clients and colleagues.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.

  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with care.
  • Ability to remain calm in a dynamic and sometimes stressful environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This role requires frequent communication and computer use. The position involves standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods. Exposure to various noise levels and cleaning chemicals is common. Handling pets that may be aggressive or frightened is part of the job. Physical demands include lifting and moving objects weighing up to 30 pounds occasionally.
