Animal Care Assistant

Token Creek Veterinary Clinic is seeking a Certified Veterinary Technician to enhance our dedicated team.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Veterinary Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians, ensuring the safety and comfort of pets and their owners while maintaining high standards of veterinary care.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Promote a culture based on our core values: Respect, Learning, Integrity, Exceptional Service, and Enjoyment.
- Prepare and sanitize examination rooms, medical instruments, and surgical areas between appointments.
- Gather initial patient data, including medical histories and vaccination records, and document all relevant information.
- Provide comfort and restraint for pets during examinations and procedures.
- Record examination findings and update patient records as instructed by veterinarians.
- Educate pet owners on general care, specific conditions, and post-procedure instructions as directed by the Veterinarian.
- Monitor and assess pets' physical status and vital signs post-surgery.
- Document and report the condition and vital signs of hospitalized and boarded animals.
- Maintain cleanliness in cages, pens, and boarding areas.
- Attend to the needs of pets, including feeding, watering, bathing, and exercising.
- Address general inquiries from clients.
- Assist in procedures that do not require direct Veterinarian or Veterinary Technician involvement.
- Conduct basic health assessments and report any signs of illness or injury under the Veterinarian's guidance.
- Administer medications and perform routine lab tests under supervision, while educating clients on medication usage and potential side effects.
- Deliver professional, efficient, and high-quality care while maximizing productivity.
- Foster a collaborative practice environment that ensures effective and compassionate healthcare for pets.
- Adhere to all clinic policies, quality assurance protocols, and minimum care standards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Completion of a NAVTA-approved Veterinary Assistant program is preferred.
Experience:
- Preferred: One year of experience in a pet care environment.
Skills and Competencies:
- Comprehensive understanding of animal care principles.
- Basic knowledge of pharmacology.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and various industry-related software.
- Effective communication skills with a focus on customer service.
- Basic math skills for accurate medication and fluid dosage.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Compassionate and empathetic approach towards pets and their owners.
- Ability to interact professionally with clients and colleagues.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
- Maintain composure in a dynamic and sometimes stressful work environment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
This role requires frequent communication and the use of a computer for extended periods. The position involves walking, standing, and sitting for long durations. Exposure to moderate noise levels, disinfectants, pet dander, and potential aggressive animals may occur. Physical demands include lifting and moving objects weighing up to 30 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly. Flexibility in scheduling, including evenings and weekends, is required.
