Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Shift Supervisor to join our team at Dartmouth College. As a Shift Supervisor, you will be responsible for providing shift coverage and management of shift operations, including safety patrol, dispatching, and night security for the College.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise officers, dispatchers, night security, and students during assigned shifts.
  • Train new employees in departmental procedures, policies, practices, and routines.
  • Monitor and evaluate work performances of all employees to ensure productivity and performance of the department are maintained.
  • Identify personnel performance issues and counsel or provide written documentation to upper management as necessary.
  • Communicate management policies and instructions to employees and relay employee concerns back to management.
Special Assignments
  • Supervisors will be assigned other special assignments or responsibilities consistent with the department's mission or may rotate these assignments as departmental needs change.
  • Examples of these assignments include scheduling personnel, maintaining statistics, facilitating a crime prevention program, coordinating personnel training, and maintaining departmental statistics and federal crime logs.
Shift Operations
  • Oversee and ensure smooth operation of the shift, enforcing and providing guidance and advice to staff on all safety and security procedures and policies.
  • Ensure patrol coverage of the campus is maintained by Safety and Security personnel on duty, assigning personnel to specific duties, patrol sectors, and assignments, and calling in personnel when necessary to provide patrol coverage.
  • Actively work with all employees, maintaining communication and regular contact with all personnel in the performance of their jobs.
  • Spends significant time in the field supervising, leading by example, and assisting/participating with staff in handling all aspects of foot patrol, vehicle patrol, details, physical security checks, and other assignments.
  • Conduct regular shift meetings, ensuring personnel are briefed and informed about events affecting their duties and shifts.
  • Ensure all reports, documentation, and logs are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ensure all electronic and video equipment is working properly and forward any problem areas to appropriate personnel for attention.
  • Keep the Director informed of any personnel or operations concerns or issues.
  • Work details as assigned or as granted.
  • Set a customer service tone for the department, addressing the needs of a diverse community.
  • Provide leadership and direction to all DOSS personnel during emergencies.
Program Support
  • Maintain a current knowledge of departmental policies and protocols, ensuring they are followed regarding any Safety and Security incidents or activities on campus.
  • Conduct investigations into incidents and, if necessary, call investigators to conduct further investigations in major incidents.
  • Oversee special events and assignments, details, and other activities occurring during their shift unless supervised by another manager of the department.
  • Review reports and logs generated from their shift, ensuring they are accurate and complete prior to the end of their shift.
  • Notify or direct notification to the Director of any significant problems or significant information that occurs.
  • Provide a weekend briefing to the Director or his designee each weekend day if necessary.
  • Makes recommendations to the Director for security and safety improvements on campus.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of specific college personnel designated by the Director, particularly those whose duties and responsibilities are interrelated to the department.
  • Ensure departmental standards, procedures, and policies are consistent and clear by communicating regularly with other departmental supervisors.
  • Attend and host manager meetings.

This is a regular full-time position with a scheduled 40 hours per week and 12 months per year. The hiring range is $27.08-$33.84 per hour. Dartmouth College is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.
