Job Summary:

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology seeks a highly skilled and experienced Director of Development for the Arts to join its Office of the Provost. This key role will work closely with the vice provost and leaders of the MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology, List Visual Arts Center, and MIT Museum to advance their missions and raise philanthropic support for the next phase of the Arts at MIT.

The successful candidate will collaborate with stakeholders to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospective individual, foundation, and corporate donors capable of making major gifts to the arts. They will create comprehensive cultivation plans and solicitation strategies to achieve sustainable growth in philanthropic contributions to the arts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategic plans to secure major gifts from individual, foundation, and corporate donors
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify and cultivate new donor prospects
  • Develop and maintain relationships with existing donors to secure repeat gifts
  • Work with the development team to create and implement comprehensive cultivation plans and solicitation strategies
  • Provide regular progress reports to stakeholders and the development team

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Seven years of front-line or annual giving fundraising experience, preferably in an arts organization, resource development in higher education, or equivalent setting
  • Record of securing six- and seven-figure gifts in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated accomplishment in a position requiring independent planning and efficient utilization of time and resources
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative and team-based environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills
  • Tact and diplomacy with confidential information
  • Experience with Ellucian Advance Web or other enterprise fundraising systems
  • Thorough knowledge of collaborative software (e.g., Google Suite, Microsoft Teams) and the Apple computing environment
  • Familiarity with data tracking software (e.g., CRMs, Airtable) or willingness to learn

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or specialized fundraising training
  • Experience with major campaigns in a nonprofit organization and with major arts donors
